The Poor People's Campaign was a march on Washington D.C. to gain economic justice for poor people in the United States that began on this day in 1968, just one month after the assassination of one of its key organizers, MLK Jr.
The protest was also organized by Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and carried out under the leadership of Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King's assassination.
After presenting an organized set of demands to Congress and executive agencies, participants set up a 3,000-person protest camp on the Washington Mall, where they stayed for six weeks in the spring of 1968.
Among those demands was a proposal for an "economic bill of rights" that included a commitment to full employment, a guaranteed annual income measure, and more low-income housing for poor Americans of all races.
"I think it is necessary for us to realize that we have moved from the era of civil rights to the era of human rights…
When we see that there must be a radical redistribution of economic and political power, then we see that for the last twelve years we have been in a reform movement…
That after Selma and the Voting Rights Bill, we moved into a new era, which must be an era of revolution…"

Hey kids you know what's cooler than watching dbz epic fight compilations on the YouTube?
Checking out these epi phytes in the canopy above us
I would be enraptured. If someone who knew there shit told me all about every plant we walked by I would swoon hard. I really like plants and animals and bugs who are also animals but I feel a distinction is needed and am interested as hell I'm all the critters and plants. I bring my lil books outside but I dunno what I'm doin. Also fungi! Or rocks. Fuck if you're into urban planning and wanna tell me why the park were in looking ar trees and bugs was made this was I'm HERE FOR IT. Love when I get to take an adult field trip. Had a pharmacology degree friend go to the Organic Health Food Store that made most of its money off the Supplement section and we went through the shelves and he told me why every single thing there was bullshit and why. Love getting field trips
Check out the book On Looking: 11 Walks Through Expert Eyes. The author walks through NYC a few times, each time with a different expert, and the expert talks about the things they notice that would be overlooked by a layperson. Interesting plants, different insect species, the architecture of the area, the history of particular buildings, the typography choices on various media, etc.
In the recent 'YouTubers you like' thread someone suggested Crime Pays But Botany doesn't. I'd seen some of his vids before but have gone back through for a solid rewatch. Ripper stuff highly recommend. Botanists are like multidisciplinary by nature, I've found, and 99% of them love bushwalking and hikes so always good company for a treck
I'll have to take a look.
Used to go on hikes with a friend like this. We would have wild salad at the end of the day. He was cool as hell an under-appreciated. He had trouble getting girls and I was like how.
