I am very sympathetic to the hand she was dealt but I would not be so quick to completely divorce the action of her boyfriend from what she wanted. That dude was a scumbag and she was mostly a victim, but she also didn’t seem to mind his general intimidation tactics and demeanor until he crossed that line.

I was completely joking. Her boyfriend was the one that physically bludgeoned Nancy Kerrigan, but it certainly wasn’t because he’d suddenly developed a passionate interest in figure skating, I don’t think.

I thought I was just continuing a bit in my other comment, but it seems you are serious... was Shane Stant, the one who broke her kneecap, Hardings boyfriend, behind her husbands back?

No, I was just confused between boyfriend versus husband. I didn't pay enough attention to be properly aware of the details and made some mistakes in my summary. I think the other people with better knowledge in the comments here are the ones worth listening to.

I tried to read up, to educate myself since I clearly am confused about aspects of it, and I got as far as:

The attack was planned by Jeff Gillooly, then-husband of fellow American figure skater Tonya Harding, and his co-conspirator Shawn Eckardt.[1][2][3] They hired Stant and his uncle Derrick Smith to carry out the attack. Gillooly and Eckardt

... and that was too many names, and I stopped caring.

but she also didn’t seem to mind his general intimidation tactics and demeanor until he crossed that line

I mean, she did call 911 on him several times and file for restraining orders because of his abuse of her, so she minded that. It's not a stretch to say she minded it enough to not want to cross him.

Most states it was legal to rape your wife - exemptions were carved out into law. Some states started changing in the 70’s, most in the 80’s - but not all until 1993.
