Even my super chud 6th grade English teacher was always mentioning that 'Shakesphere used they with singular antecedents' and he was apparently the father of modern English in her eyes, so the conversation ended, there was no debate.

In my experience the "singular they is grammatically incorrect" mistake is often from people who learned english as a second language, like myself. A significant part of this is because most ESL teachers are frankly not good at teaching
