"Vote with your wallet!" feels especially hollow when the other choices were hollowed out and crushed by economy of scale tactics.

Fortunately, where I am now, there's a lot of good local food, including farmer's markets and actual farms open to the public to buy things directly.

There's a McDonald's and a few other such franchises here and there... but to my delight, most of the time, they seem nearly deserted.
