As I was playing TO, I thought to myself "sheesh what a dumb idea, what a contrarian take, bad bit. I can't wait to enjoy every QuestCorp/Yasumi Matsuno & co game" yeah
Idk why but it seems to me like Matsuno and the gang looked at 1995's Tactics Ogre and decided that every individual gameplay system that was fun or cool or set the game apart was bad, and tore it all out by the roots. Subsequent games only retain and emphasize its worst, most annoying elements (required grinding increased, obtuse interfaces, unclear class systems, etc) and truly unique bits like free-switching classes as stat growth sheets, freely equippable gear, highly flexible magic systems, neato magic scaling and more all get yeeted with the bath water. Literally why

Yeah, while I do like FFT a lot, I agree it's a step down from TO. It's still one of the best games ever made by mere virtue of it being an above-average SRPG with a very good story, but in both gameplay and narrative it doesn't hit quite the same highs as Tactics Ogre.Considering the particular things you liked about Tactics Ogre that you mention at the end, you might actually really like Three Houses. Or you'd hate it passionately. Either or really.

Wtf really, the STORY isn't as good either???????? People are constantly doing unspeakable sexual acts on this game specifically for its narrative! Animals have no god, and shit! Goddamn I cannot BELIEVE I ruined it for myself by playing Ogre first, god fuckin damn. Maybe I'll play Shining Force II instead, this is really dumbOkay well maybe :> I wasn't that hot on Awakening (fine) or Fates (red one, also fine) but Idk perhaps I will ask my wife to yoink Three Houses... sadly the anime dating stuff doesn't appeal. They could make a good SRPG dating sim! But the romantic subplots in Awakening were whatever.

The story is very good. I just think it doesn't go quite as hard as TO. But it's basically Tactics Ogre with a different focus. Instead of race, it shifts to classism. Instead of imperialism, it focuses on religion. Instead of Vyce, you get his far cooler equivalent Delita. It's written in basically the same style and building off the same belief set, but just exploring something else. I'm a weirdo who likes narratives about the absolute biggest scum of the earth though, being awful people to others. So the human focus of TO appealed more. I'm the exact person the Law and Neutral routes were written for since both deliberately emotionally punish the player for being terrible and I love that.If the dating sim aspects didn't appeal don't bother, 3H goes harder on the social stuff (albeit less hard on the shipping stuff). It is much better written than Awakening and Fates but that's easy since those two have godawful writing. But the social stuff is the reason I'm in the 'I passionately hate this game' camp since they feel like such a waste of my time when I just want to commit warcrimes while eating hot chip.
Any gane with relationship stuff gets weighed up by how much I can avoid.
I'd play any fire emblem without it.
But any game where there is dating either I play ace or not at all.
Then you can play any FE that came out prior to Awakening. And also Shadows of Valentia.

I love my little suffering games with strong ludonarrative harmony so Thracia was basically made for me specifically. Also the artstyle is the best in the series imo, Mayumi Hirota is incredible and fits the Kaga FE/Kaga Saga vibe perfectly.

I'm sorry but it is good and I loved it. I just also hate parts of it. If it's any consolation the classism is done in a kinda libby way depending on if you read Delita's character as an antagonist or a secondary protagonist.Far, far better. The characters in general are far more interesting and fleshed out. I have issues with them but they're an easy top 3 Fire Emblem cast whereas Awakening and Fates are both bottom 5. The social aspects are mostly annoying since they're a time sink that gets worse every time you replay the game but on a first play they're not too bad.

The game has four routes and you have to replay the whole game for 3 of them. They only become notably different after the halfway mark (25 hours for me). So the social aspect becomes incredibly routine and tiring incredibly quickly. It genuinely burned me out when the game came out after I beat 3 of the 4 routes in the first month to the point I still haven't beaten the 4th 5 years later. Wait wtf this game is 5 years old??? Jesus I'm so old.spoiler
