It takes time, the first year of guitar I couldn't even really alternative pick so I just down picked everything.
Thinking about how good Iโd be by now if I just stuck with it instead of only practicing sporadically over the years
Yeah the part that sucks starting out is having to learn the basics before being able the songs you want to play but I think this can be alleviated by learning simpler songs by artists you like. I don't really know many songs like that for keyboard though since it's not really my wheelhouse.
I was thinking back to simpler rock songs I learned when starting out and how they would translate to a piano / keyboard and for whom the bell tolls by metallica might be a good one. It's mostly ringing power chords, a chromatic riff and a lead melody that repeats throughout. I imagine it could be a good way to get you using both your right and left hand (left hand playing rhythm and right hand playing lead melody or vocal melody).
