As reported by VGC and Japanese gaming outlet Beep21, Sega console designer Hideki Sato has died. The engineer and former Sega president was 77. Sato's career with Sega began in the 1970s⁠—SegaRetro.org lists his earliest projects as the arcade games MonacoGP, Turbo, and Star Jacker.

Sato's most notable contribution to gaming history, however, would be leading the engineering teams behind every Sega home console from 1983 to the company's exit from the hardware business in 2001.

This Valentine's Day there is a lot of red on the screen for the X.Org Server with the code delta as a result of renaming of their main Git development branch and in the process selectively dropping questionable patches to the prior "master" codebase.

The effort noted in January of X.Org Server May Create A New Selective Git Branch With Hopes Of A New Release This Year has now been realized. As of a short time ago today, the "master" Git branch is ended with new X.Org Server development now on "main" and in the process starting off from a starting point of 2024 and then laying on the acceptable patches that were queued up over the past two years. HOTFIX:

• reverted/disabled winewayland systray icon patch introduced in 10-30 (it caused a lot of breakage in multiple games, as well as breaking in gamescope session on steam deck. no bueno.)
• fixed video playback regression introduced in 10-29 (fixes video playback in Nioh 3 and a few other games)
• fixed Warhammer 40k Darktide crashing on opening (issue introduced in 10-29)

• added protonfix for Warhammer 40k Darktide to skip the launcher -- this prevents a bug where sometimes the game would launch as an audio-only background process when run from the launcher.

KaOS Linux 2026.02 was released today as the February 2026 ISO snapshot for this independent GNU/Linux distribution, which uses Arch Linux’s pacman package manager, and the first release to ship with the Niri Wayland compositor.

After using the KDE/Plasma desktop environment by default for more than 12 years since its initial release under the name of KdeOS, the KaOS Linux distribution will no longer ship with its unique Plasma desktop setup, as the devs do not want to use the systemd init system anymore in the distro.

Instead, they put a Niri/Noctalia setup into the KaOS Linux 2026.02 release, while retaining the distribution’s unique look and still offering users access to popular KDE applications that were shipped with the Plasma desktop. However, this release still ships with systemd as the default init system.

US immigration and Customs Enforcement documents that were provided to Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire—one of the states where ICE aims to acquire a building and retrofit it to house at least 1,000 people at a time—show that the administration plans to spend $38.3 billion on its mass detention plan.
