There are a few of causes for hope.

First, Trump has surrounded himself with loyalists and sycophants, not competence. On the downside, this is how Putin ended up on year 3 of a 3-day "special military operation" in Ukraine. Trump is going to make incredibly stupid mistakes not just because he's stupid, but everyone he has surrounded himself with will be telling him how wonderful and clever he is. On the other hand, this is a good way to get clobbered by reality.

Canada and Mexico have responded with targeted tariffs and are also planning ahead to next steps. Heck, Canada just finalized a trade deal with Ecuador. Sure it's not going to replace the US, but it shows many competent people are out there working for Canada. Meanwhile the US government apparatus is going to be gutted of competent people.

Second, Canada does export a lot of raw materials, which should be easier to shift to other markets. Also things like hydo power and oil can probably absorb a fairly high increase in cost without being substantially effected. Hydro power as an example, can easily eat a 10% increase and still be the cheapest source of electricity. Canada could probably slap export tariffs on oil, hydro electricity, and potash and the US will just have to eat it.

Finally, Trump will probably continue tariffing the EU and other countries as well, further triggering retaliatory tariffs. This means Bosch, Samsung and LG will need to make more dishwashers to replace the Whirlpool and Maytag dishwashers that aren't going to be sold outside the US (as an example). It's going to suck, but Canada already has CETA and CPTPP to build on, and should be deepening CANZUK ties. The world is bigger than the US, and the US looks set to isolate themselves from everyone. Being on the outside in that case is better.

Copypasta my other comment:

The bulk of Canadian exports to the US are oil. We can certainly tariff US goods, but export tariffs on Canadian oil and hydro electricity to the US will probably be a big component of the Canadian response.

Even with a big increase on hydro power exports to the US, it's still cheaper than most other sources of electricity, so they'll still happily pay it.

As to oil, there are some refineries in the US that are set up to process Canadian bitumen. Canada's long history of just exporting raw materials and re-importing finished goods give a pretty outsized room to manuever here. This refineries will probably just pony up and pay more.

Where the damage will come is in areas like the auto sector, where there are tightly coupled supply chains.

Paul Krugman points out in his article The End of North America that there is probably already damage done to the concept of North American manufacturing.

Trump is going to do a whole lot of damage, we're going to take some of that damage, but my favourite quote on the topic:

no one wins trade wars, but the kid who never stands up for himself always loses and for a long time

I'm just honoured to be considered threatening enough to bother with interfering.

I started my save within an hour of the expedition going live. And spawned in a storm, with multiple hostile critters. I died twice in two minutes, deleted the cursed save, and tried again. Did better, but fell into a cave system killing critters (with a mining laser), and got lost… before I could build the Terrain Manipulator. After 20 minutes, I deleted the cursed save, and started again. Third time's the charm! Much better start, even grabbed some Storm Crystals for later right at the start.

Needed to get some work done, but I've gotten a couple of hours in since yesterday, steady progress, having fun stumbling around, but I can see I'm going to get stuck looking for Crystal Sulphide. I don't think I'm anywhere near the ocean, although I see 3 underwater creatures on this world so there must be some somewhere. I've got the Minotaur built, but that doesn't seem the best way to search for ocean, it's a little slow. If only I had a spaceship… oh wait, that's what the Crystal Sulphide's for.

Also, got killed again, by one of those evil teddy bears that jumped me while I was killing a couple of the crystal spider dudes. Was close to my base, but still! Embarrassing.

It's kind of how the US is lauded for how much they donate per capita... when GoFundMe is the largest provider of "medical insurance". I don't want to dump on charity, or people who are proud of how much they donate, but I also want to emphasize that charity shouldn't ever be necessary.

Valve better have Steam Deck 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. Valve doesn't do 3 well

AI has been the name for the field since the Dartmouth Workshop in 1956. Early heuristic game AI was AI. Just because something is AI doesn't mean it is necessarily very "smart". That's why it's commonly been called AI, since before Deep Blue beat Kasparov.

If you want to get technical, you could differentiate between Artificial Narrow Intelligence, AI designed to solve a narrow problem (play checkers, chess, etc.) vs. Artificial General Intelligence, AI designed for "general purpose" problem solving. We can't build an AGI yet, even a dumb one. There is also the concept of Weak AI or Strong AI.

You are correct though, ChatGPT, Dall-E, etc. are not AGI's, they aren't capable of general problem solving. They are much more capable than previous AI technologies, but it's not SkyNet (yet).

I'm pretty sure that most of the solid anti-war protestors would expect Ukraine to just accept Russian territorial demands, up to and including complete annexation.

It turns into a reductio ad absurdum pretty quickly though. Putin didn't seem to return Crimea or the occupied regions of Donbass and Luhansk when asked politely. Not even when asked sternly. Indeed, it would seem that when all he faced was stern disapproval he decided to come back for more.

There is no doubt in my mind that supporting Ukraine now is stopping more Russian aggression later. Besides, Putin can end this war any time. Just go back to the original borders. The only reason not to is his yearning for Imperial glory. The irony being that many of these anti-war protestors would probably proclaim themselves anti-colonialists.

Meanwhile I've seen this story all over Canadian Mastodon and Lemmy. I guess Meta just has to do business in India.

Just started the new community expedition, so first real taste of the Echoes update. I think my starter freighter crew are engaging in some light piracy on the side. My standing with the main system race keeps ticking down every so often, and I gain rep with the Outlaws faction. At least if they are going to go rogue and loot merchants, they can cut me in for a piece of the action!

Didn't see anything in the patch notes.

From @[email protected] :

@Kaymorak @Grimpen It’s a bug. Whenever another player engages civilian freighters, they gain standing with outlaws, and lose it with the local race running the system… And the bug makes ANY player in that system gain and lose. :P

It’ll hopefully be fixed in the upcoming patch, which is in test.

I've stopped this happening so much by parking my freighter in quieter systems. Without a steady supply of salvaged frigate modules I haven't upgraded my freighter much anyways. If your freighter isn't somewhere where other players and you are at the same time, it should hoist the Jolly Roger.

People obsess over the weirdest things. Just need to develop broader hobbies, instead of obsessing over video games. Like maybe read some Governor-General literary awards winning novels. Yeah.

Interesting reading about the "authoritarian personality" in this article. Lots of the opposition to harm reduction policies does seem to be fueled by a desire for "bad people" to suffer.

There is a "Top - All Time" filter at least on the web. Works well for local, not sure about off local though. Mobile apps might not have all the filters though.

It seems to show the posts with the most updoots. Curiously the first page of Top - All Time are all from the last few weeks. Goes to show the explosive influx of Reddit Refugees into the Fediverse.

[-] [email protected] 21 points 2 years ago

Yeah. When Apollo, RiF, Relay, et al stop working, a large amount of people who just use Reddit on their phones and don't really engage with the hows and whys of the platform itself will suddenly get pushed to either figure out the Reddit official app or try something else. There will probably be a bump then, via whatever is available on the App Store/Play. I expect most will just stop using Reddit and continue using whatever other apps they already use that work (ie Instagram, Twitter, Mastodon, et al). A significant amount will just use the official Reddit app. A substantial minority will start to look for Reddit alternatives though.

Of those who stick with Reddit, or just abandon it; there will be a hole left, a Reddit shaped hole in their heart (or at least their bathroom doomscrolling). Even new Reddit won't fill that hole after July 1st. As more and more abandon Reddit and find their way to Lemmy and kbin, that hole can be filled better here.

I think Lemmy and kbin already have that critical mass. They'll be interesting enough to maintain their communities and organically grow, so the continued influx of Reddit refugees will just accelerate their growth.

Highway 4 is still closed near Cameron Lake. This is cutting off Port Alberni, Uclulet and Tofino from the rest of the island, unless you want to use back roads.
