Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

The death of Zionism has just massively accelerated.

previous preamble

BRICS has expanded to include Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Argentina is currently experiencing technical difficulties due to the election of the ancap clown Milei - once he's out of office, maybe they can try again.

I don't really have much to say about this one way or another. BRICS has, so far, made only nervous and small steps towards challenging US hegemony. This isn't really that unexpected, as only China and Russia are the real "true believers" in ending US hegemony (and even then, China's government either believes, or is pretending to believe, that reconciliation is still possible). Brazil, India, and South Africa are less enthralled by the concept of dethroning the US, most especially India, who had to make a firm decision in 2023 whether they were going to be on the side of America, or on the side of the Global South, and chose the former, strengthening their military relationship. They're still best of friends with Russia, but they are very obviously the sussy imposter of the BRICS group.

The prospects of BRICS are only really loosely correlated with the prospects of multipolarism, though. It's not a process that hinges on BRICS's successes or failures. It is coming because the contender states (in Desai's terminology) are irreversibly rising, and the US is irreversibly falling. If it will not be BRICS that leads, it will be a different organization. A better world is not only possible, but inevitable - unfortunately for the US.

I'm taking a week off the updates because I've been swamped lately, and also feel the need to reconfigure (and find new) sources. Needless to say that I've grown tired of Financial Times headlines, even if they do represent the actual views of the bourgeoisie.

The Country of the Week is Ethiopia! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

I think most Western leftists will be disappointed by Taiwan's election. DPP is most likely going to win.

Anyone heard any updates about Israel's defence at the ICJ? I know they planned to show some video from October 7, but the court denied them the opportunity to do so as it's irrelevant.

Channel 5's (All Gas No Brakes) Heartbreaking WAR IN UKRAINE Video — Vaush (link redacted but video exists)

Look, maybe if you watch a lot of twitch what's up overhead looks normal to you. But having seen all kinds of public figures go from music & sports & gaming to serving a reactionary political purpose I think looking at stuff that appears professional and networked together is a bare minimum. You tell me what I'm looking at here. Because I don't like it. Look up Jake Hanrahan.

What was Popular Front likely doing in Ukraine, along with other NATO anarchist groups? IMHO probably the same groundwork as our NGOs. https://eventsinukraine.substack.com/p/bydlomania

Seeing rumors/reports that the Qataris and Saudis are providing logistical support for uS-UK bombing campaign in Yemen. Looking for more reliable sources, but go fill up your gas tanks now if that's the case.

Interesting that China fixed-asset investment is growing fastest in Xizang, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia...

The self-rule government of the Faroe Islands, a colonial dependency of Denmark, is proposing to amend the north Atlantic island nation's abortion code, introducing a right to free abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy. The proposed change in legislation comes after a 2021 recommendation from the Nordic Council for the Faroese self-rule to amend it's abortion legislation as it is not considered to be in alignment with Nordic standards of gender equality.

Abortion was legalised in Denmark in 1970 but the Faroe Islands has kept pre-1970 laws on the books. This means that today women can only get legal abortions in the Faroe Islands in cases of sexual abuse or serious health issues. Traditionally fundamentalist Christian ideology has been prevalent in Faroese society and has thus far prevented a legalisation of abortion.

It volcanoed again (in Iceland)!

  • An eruption began north of Grindavík just before eight o'clock this morning.
  • Lava is about 450 meters from the northernmost houses and flows towards the town.
  • Part of the eruption occurred within the ramparts that are being built.
  • An intense series of small earthquakes started just before three o'clock at Sundhnúk craters.
  • Lava tunnel extends under town of Grindavík.
  • Grindavík was evacuated last night.
  • The mountain Þorbjörn has moved 20 centimeters to the west.
  • Grindavík town is partially without electricity.

Here you can see it start

Spotted a B-2 over our skies today (Middle East)

Well fuck that's not good. The USA got the big guns out for this.

Does Iran have the capability to detect this aircraft? The last time a stealth aircraft was shot down over the Balkans, it was a much simpler and less stealthy design in the F-117, was only detectable because it used the same flight path as before, and was detected by setting the early warning radar to its lowest frequency and widest band. This meant the radar only had a range of 25km, or around 15 miles.

headline is dogshit so:

Hezbollah attacked an Israeli army base with explosive drones deployed from Lebanon on Tuesday, hitting the position for the first time in what the Iran-backed group declared part of its response to recent Israeli assassinations in Lebanon.

NATO military excellence news: Two Danish patrol vessels of the Knud Rasmussen class has been patrolling the Arctic for 15 years without functional cannons. The two ships were built without fire control systems for their 76 millimetre cannons, which according to sources in the Danish navy makes the ships' main armaments useless for firing anything but warning shots. If the ships were to fire their guns in anger, sailors would have to point the gun in the general direction of the intended target, press fire and hope for the best.

In 2013 parliament approved the construction of a third vessel, this time with a fire control system installed. The parliamentary finance committee was told that part of the budget would go towards installing the systems on the first two ships. In 2015 parliament was told that the Liberal Party-controlled ministry of defense had decided to buy the systems from Swedish arms manufacturer Saab.

In 2016 a large report on Danish military presence in the Arctic made by the Liberal Party-controlled ministry of defense told parliament that the fire control systems were being implemented and stresses the importance of Danish warships actually being armed if they were to be a credible military threat.

However, it was only last spring, seven years later, that the implementation actually started. The last ship will finally get its fire control system this year, if the Liberal Party-controlled ministry of defense's plans can be believed.

The current minister of defense claims to have had no knowledge of the long implementation period prior to being made aware by reports in the media but has promised to make an investigation.

Danish parliament has decided to spend a whopping DKK 100 billion on armaments over the coming decade. A large part of the money is planned to go towards a modernisation of the navy.

The Danish navy has been criticised in the press several times lately. Lack of sailors has made warships unable to operate at night and has caused ships to go on patrol missions without enough crew to man their guns. The ships themselves has also been criticised for being run down and not meeting NATO standards. The Liberal Party-controlled ministry of defense has also received much criticism for trying to mislead parliament and paint an overly positive picture of the state of the navy.
