Gov. Mike DeWine is one of only a few Republican governors to veto a restriction on transition-related care for minors or a ban on trans student-athlete participation.

Ohio’s governor vetoed a bill Friday that would have restricted both transition-related care for minors and transgender girls’ participation on school sports teams.

Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto makes him one of only two Republican governors to veto a restriction on gender-affirming care, alongside Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson in 2021, and one of only three Republican governors to veto a trans athlete bill after Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb last year.

In a press conference on Friday following his veto, DeWine said the “gut-wrenching” decision about whether a minor should have access to gender-affirming care “should not be made by the government, should not be made by the state of Ohio,” rather it should be made by the child’s parents and doctors.

This somewhat illustrates the difference between being a conservative and being a fascist.

Liberals and conservatives don't have a party to represent them. Pffft! Who am I kidding? American citizens don't have anybody to represent them.

Everyone gets representation!

You get to pick between pro-corporate fascists, or pro-corporate politicians who believe we should meet facists halfway on whatever they demand because they want to compromise just to say they worked out a compromise.

It ends up with the vast majority disappointed in who they vote for, and mostly just voting so the other side loses.

In a two party system, it'll eventually come down to the lowest common denominator. With one side aiming for the slightest bit higher than the other. And the other is in a constant nose dive to differentiate from the first.

The only thing that can save it is at least holding our party to a higher standard than "at least they're not the other team".

The Ohio General Assembly, which is controlled by a Republican supermajority, can override the governor’s veto with a three-fifths majority vote.

So, while the vetos are great news, folks in Ohio should contact their reps to let them know to let the vetos stand.

Every once in awhile DeWine does shit that surprises me. At the beginning of Covid, he seemed to be doing a pretty good job of handling it with then Amy Acton at the Dept of Health, but then caved to the idiots in the party and she left.

Nice to see some good news for LBQTI+ people for once!

As many others have said... Just really good, uplifting news here that DeWine did his research thoroughly and made the right decision. Some people go off of "what they've heard" and believe the lies, without talking to families and doctors (like DeWine did) to find out the reality of the situation.

Because it doesn't fucking matter. How many trans kids are playing sports at all in Ohio? 3? 4?

But what about when they break a record? Do you not see how this will be the undoing of the american youth?

If highschool sports aren’t perfectly up to my specific standards of fairness, then we have failed as a country. I’m pretty sure this is why we have school shootings.

Wow, that's pretty surprising considering what I've read about him.

What a refreshingly humane stance coming from a GOP governor.
