On this day in 1970, a spontaneous uprising against U.S. military occupation broke out in Koza, Okinawa, Japan after an American drunk driver struck a local pedestrian. Approximately 60 Americans and 27 Okinawans were injured, and dozens of cars with American license plates were torched.

Following Japan's defeat in World War II, the country was occupied by Allied forces and governed under martial law. While most of Japan regained its independence in April 1952, the Okinawa Prefecture was to remain under U.S. military occupation for another twenty years.

Prior to the events of December 20th, three Americans had been acquitted via court martial after striking and killing an Okinawa civilian. This incident fueled the growing discontent of Okinawans with the standard status of forces that exempted U.S. servicemen from Okinawan justice.

On December 20th, 1970, a drunk U.S. serviceman struck an Okinawan pedestrian in the city of Koza. A crowd quickly surrounded the car and the policemen who had arrived, demanding that this incident not also be swept under the rug.

When American MPs arrived and attempted to pull the driver away, the protest turned violent, with thousands gathering to try to prevent the driver from leaving. By the end of the night, dozens of cars with American license plates had been torched and approximately 60 Americans and 27 Okinawans had been injured.

Currently very sick with probably the flu. This shit sucks. I'm more convinced than ever that everyone that downplayed covid by saying it was just a flu should be shot.

Became friendly with guy who delivers the packages in my street, so much so that he delivers all packages in the street to me and then tells his computer that my neighbours (who the packages are for) aren’t home. Now I get to know my neighbours a little better by saying ‘I know right’ when they complain about their package not being delivered directly to them while they’re picking up their packages from me.

It's a good thing you can't physically hurt someone through the internet, because some of the annoying smug Lemmy libs who post on here would have to deal with my fist right up their fucking asses.

Trying to sell some extra video game stuff on Kijiji here (Canadian Craigslist, mostly) and I guess there are people who just cruise it and shoot messages on stuff they're only slightly interested in because the amount of people who will message me and both try to offer like 1/2 or 2/3 of what I'm asking (already asking pretty low) and then also asking if I can drive it out to them in Ottawa. Like, fuck off, dude. Don't you freaks get cars so you can complain-brag about how much better it is than public transportation but you can't spend 90 minutes to save like $50-60. Every once in a while I'll get a guy who's cool and is like "can you verify some things . . . OK , cool. I'll be there at this time with the money you're asking" and then they come and take the item and give me the money and that's that.

Honest question for everyone. Is the economy actually doing good under Biden? I assume it isn't because everything is just horse shit and what not, but every liberal i see on the internet is just trying to convince everyone that its doing good

Adventures of a month long veteran of Amazon delivery drivering.

Today's episode: Suburban Generosity!

I was pretty psyched on people who leave snacks and drinks out for their delivery people. I keep a gallon of water in my van and I bring some trail mix for a snack during my lunch break so it's not like I need to be saved from the elements or anything, but I'll take a couple snack sized bags of doritos or whatever. It's nice.

or at least I thought it was until I started going around asking everybody to "Alexa, thank my driver" for me so I'd get a holiday bonus 5 dollars at a time (one of the more senior employees told me they used to get ACTUAL bonuses). The tone this lady used with me while refusing to open the door "is there something you needed??" was so dismissive and condescending that it absolutely blew my mind. Those snacks aren't being nice to someone you think has a tough job. They're bread you throw at pigeons. When it came to actually talking to me it turns out I'm just the help. So fuck your sugary granola bars and fuck your bewilderingly tiny bottles of water.

So we got gift cards as a Christmas thing at work and the owner decided to give different amounts to different people. When a dude I work with saw me put my $50 gift card in my bag he mentioned he only got $35. I've been there longer and am informally higher ranking, it's more an experience and seniority thing than any official difference in position. Just give everyone the same amount, it's weird to make a caste system with Christmas gifts.

Today i found an old pic from highschool of me and my gf at the time. I thougjt it was cute and sent it around to some people.

Multiple people had strange reactions. One person said its normal to start a conversation first.

But small talk is boring! I had like 20 people i wanted to send this to im not going to warm them all up first! Thats too much work just let me send the thing i wanna send.

One of the modern re-treads of this story is that Demeter was a total helicopter mom and the whole who "kidnapping" thing was a big conspiracy with the gods to distract Demeter so Persephone and Hades could go on a honeymoon and have some time to themselves.
