Is anyone really that excited to have cars crashing into your second story bedroom?
Flying cars have been around for ages, they're called helicopters. They're loud, expensive and dangerous as every other idea for something equivalent is.
We've had actual flying cars too, though they were really just car shaped quadcopters and never made it to mass production because they sucked as transportation.
What do you do if the engine dies in your car? Put your hazards on and pull over. In your helicopter? Pray you can autorotate to a field.
Gyrocoptors. They're closer to a flying car, since if you can drive a car, you can legally fly a gyrocoptor in the US. Just remember to file flight plans, and watch out for power lines. The way you land the things is to kill the engine.
They've still got the same danger as helicopters. If something goes wrong, you can't glide and you'll likely just fall out of the sky.
You do glide. The rotor providing lift isn't connected to anything, the lift is provided by horizontal speed. You'd have to literally hit a building, a mountain, or power lines to crash the things. You don't need a pilots license to operate them, because you basically can't crash them and the entire aircraft weighs quite a bit less than a car.
Honestly the older ones with the wings from the 40s are probably less “kill you if something goes wrong” than anything today.
Helicopters aren't cars. But actual flying cars have indeed existed for at least ten years. I'm too lazy to go find this segment I watched on the topic, but I remember seeing one.

here you go
At first I thought someone had done that to a SAAB which would have been appropriately hilarious
Did that thing really fly? The center of lift seems way off from the center of weight.
Musk “it’s a flying car!”
Car just falls slowly and doesn’t fly anywhere
Fuck musk and all that, but this was a damn cool stunt and some seriously impressive engineering.
Why does there have to be a "but" there? He didn't do any of the engineering, so fuck him regardless.
Unfortunately he paid the engineers to make this stunt for the sole purpose of increasing his wealth.
I don't think it's going to work out for him this time, but I've been wrong before

but, like, not really?
all that tech already existed, and is used elsewhere on actually cool things that do stuff. it just wasn't applied to cars because there's no practical purpose aside from trying to boost public sentiment and stock valuation.
sure it was sort of neat, but seeing real machines work on those principles is even neater. it just looks less cool because, y'know, safety
I would install a roof top parking on my house, transform the driveway into garden.
Roof load of 1700kg car?
You'd be surprised how much snow can weigh. Though it is usually not so heavy in such a small space.
I guess I could hook up an air compressor along the tesla charger and keep it hovering instead of landing it. Bonus, it would keep the snow off the roof.
Great way to get a shitty car into your living room.
Musk didn't do shit tbh, it's all engineers and marketing team.
The engineering looked like the Ronald Reagan starwars. Impressive ofc, but cool? It looked like shit IMO.
And all that to overshadow donalds problems, smh.
Was it "falling with style", or did they just aim it at the ground and miss?
I feel like I should speak up, because I feel deeply betrayed.
We had established a solid timeline for moving forward with the project, and the current progress allows us to meet all prerequisites comfortably
Despite our sincere expectations that we would now initiate our relationship, we find ourselves dumbfounded to have received such a curt and inconsiderate reply.
Be advised that we're considering all our options, including litigation and not leaving the basement.
Middling regards,
Betrayed Person
