blame CNN.

They created the modern 24 hour news cycle, which slowly destroyed news media in general over the next 40 years.

There is not enough happening to sustain a 24 hour news cycle, so it becomes constant hammering of the slightest incidents, or crimes from 800lbs a way, or whatever it takes.

Thus creating the guise, for people not capable of critical thought, that the world is on fire and crime is rampant. . when they are seeing nothing but the same crime being reported on 200 times over 2 days, and the occasional incident from somewhere they'd never go and has no relevance on them or their local area, much less their entire state.

or crimes from 800lbs a way

    "What radicalized you?"

Those 800lbs criminals I saw on the 24h news shows. I never thought they'd be a threat but now I'm afraid of the immigrants and transgender folk because one of them could be them 800lbs criminal type coming to eat my dogs and cats!

What ive always found crazy about the 24 hour news cycle is how little information is in there.

For a while I watched msnbc all day, just to have something on in the background.

In a day they would cover maybe 6 stories, just over and over and over. Here’s some new talking head to give their take, it’s effectively identical to the take the last 5 talking heads gave.

I stopped watching it because I realized that in a given day I was maybe getting about 20 minutes of information on repeat.

The channels have time, they could give complex and nuanced discussions around the 6 interesting things that happened that day, they could expand their coverage to the other 100 or 1000 interesting things that happened. But everyday they find the 6 stories that will lead to the most eyeballs watching the most ads and hammer them.

They probably assume a good chunk of their audience is people not really paying attention, or who tuned in halfway. For someone watching all day it's repetitive, but for someone who just showed up it's fresh. If they did something deep that needs context, the people who arrive 35% of the way through are going to be lost.

Yea I just had it on for noise myself but at some point I thought “haven’t they already gone over this” and then it was like seeing something you couldn’t unsee.

It makes sense to have that “drop in” aspect but it really makes me wonder about people that do just sit and watch Fox News all day. I think after 3 or 4 days I decided music or silence was better.

How many times can you get angry about the same news story over and over?

As with so many things, you can trace it back to Ronald Reagan.

Cronkite, Peter Jennings et al worked under a thing called 'The Fairness Doctrine.' Back when radio was first regulated, both Parties agreed that the public airwaves should remain neutral. No one person / company could own more than six radio stations [AM and FM] Any time there was an editorial, the station had to offer time for opposing views, and the stations had to broadcast news daily.

Reagan had seen how that system had taken down Nixon, and swore it would be destroyed.

Unfortunately, state media can be as well.

My country's national broadcaster is still fairly OK, there doesn't seem to be any real pressure to censor specific topics or anything. The BBC on the other hand, has been losing its credibility hard in recent years with all their anti-palestine shit.

And now imagine if the US had a prominent national broadcaster. Like NPR does exist, but what if it was something that a majority of Americans watched on TV. Now imagine what would happen to it under someone like Trump.

  • I think it's more than just so you won't notice. It's more like so you take out the anger of things going up on whatever the news has fed you.

Ugh I hate that I agree with this because teenage me loved The Real World and Road Rules so much, but yeah there's no way we could have known how that would accelerate the decline in the specific way that it has

I get bummed out knowing trump is a product of reality tv.

Its all leading to Logan Paul influencer presidency and if im not dead like my insides are now I just may end the horror show myself.

Rip twitch, we should have done a better job preserving you.

Things were never the same after CNN made the news ticker permanent on 9/11/01

I miss when news sources were just the paper and nightly local news.

I wonder how hard it would be to sell people on a news site subscription that just updates once a day with actual journalism instead of click-bait headlines to drive ad revenue and AI articles.

Yes and that guy would tell you every day that Israel is in Gaza to defend themselves etc. And you would believe it as the west has for the past 80 years.

The modern media landscape has its own problems but it is so much richer than the prior narrative led order that the likes of BBC still shovel out today.

Still got that type of news in Germany. Except the guy in a suit is sometimes replaced by a woman in a blazer. Daily programme called "Tagesschau" is still the most watched show in german television.

Unfortunately they've been making it a bit worse deliberately, by stretching out irrelevant topics and adding street interviews with people that have nothing to say :/

It's never been that look at old news stations panic about the "crime crisis" or even late 19th century American newspapers about natives or even the "Chinese stealing" jobs.

Yeah until Reagan it was just normal factual news (don't laugh!) and definitely no segregation, wars, red scare campaigns, random ass moral panics that news would help narrativize

I, too, miss the dulcet tones of Peter Mansbridge. Man could be reporting on the worst thing ever but it was just calming to hear him. Sort of like, "yes, this is horrifying but stay calm and you'll be okay".

Some neighbors deserve my hatred, mainly the ones I had in rural areas. Luckily my current neighbors seem great, I live in a city now.
