Yeah, I had a similar sobering epiphany recently, that an extra 5k would fix literally every health problem I have and let me buy all the stuff I want to branch out and try some new hobbies. I'd love to learn the accordion. But 5 thousand might as well be a million for all the money I actually make surviving paycheck to paycheck.

Would starting an animal rescue, or contributing to wildlife conservation efforts, be considered giving it away? If I had truly unfathomable riches and the connections that can buy, I'd love to start a cat rescue, with enough resources to never refuse any kitty in need, and buy up every shelter in existence that doesn't have a no-kill policy just to shut it down/reorganize it - and to run a bear and big cat sanctuary that also engages in habitat conservation efforts, because grizzly bears and tigers are my two favourite animals ever and if the world went to absolute shit and I had the power to keep animals safe, I'd absolutely prioritize all the bears and all the kitty cats. And since the world is going to shit...

I suppose a truly frivolous and expensive project would be to develop and mass produce what I call the ultimate teddy bear - a realistic plush bear cub. A synthetic fur that exactly matches the coarseness and thickness of bear fur, complete with coarser guard hairs and softer undercoat and a purely soft belly (not sure if baby bears have that, but cats and lots of double coated dogs do and it's practical for good snuggles), weighted/beanbag areas in the stuffing to match the weight distribution of a real bear cub, synthetic claws (with rounded points, of course, don't want any injuries from careless snuggles, the whole point of this is safe bear hugs), textured nose, paw pads, and inner ears (and realistic bear pawpads, not classic "teddy bear toebeans"), exact colours of a real bear, and a "growler" like some very early teddy bears and predecessor bear toys had - turn the teddy upside down and he growls. Ideally I'd want to create and produce them in several ages of cub and several types of bear, as well as adult koala bears, but the first step would be just to get a very young grizzly perfect and reproducible. It's one thing to spend resources attempting to find or have made the best possible teddy bear, but entirely another to develop your own as a mass producible product and have it mass produced. Now, the question is whether I'm allowed to give the bears away, or if I have to sell them at at least production cost. Because if I'm allowed to give them away, then literally every facility on earth that is responsible for kids and takes toy donations will recieve a crate of teddy bears - I have "fly to space on a whim" trillionaire money in this hypothetical, I can pay a few people to make that list and ship every location on it a crate of bears I was having made anyway. Hell, send them to every wildlife sanctuary and animal shelter, every video of a baby animal being cute I've seen out of those places involves a comfort plushie. Any facility that might give them away or otherwise consume them gets a new crate on a monthly basis. I would also sell them, at cost or for a token amount, both in bulk and individually, to organizations and individuals - anyone who wants the bears can buy them, for less than any other seller of plush animals charges for a far less complicated plush bear, and any organization that has a reasonable and non destructive need for teddy bears can get them for free, just talk to the bear in charge and they'll send a box of teddy bears your way as long as you don't want them to resell or destroy.

I know that you can buy teddy bears with at least some of these features, but I've never seen one that had all of them, I've only ever seen one proper growler, and I've never seen the fur gotten right on a "realistic" teddy bear. It's usually a cheap coarse synthetic that feels synthetic, with no softer fluff anywhere a real bear's fur might be softer, and often the colour is very odd. I've also never seen the paws gotten right or any good attempts at claws. (Part of me wants to find that one bear I know I had, and any other "realistic" bears of similar quality, and make a video talking about them the way retro tech people review old computer peripherals and upgrades. I.e. "This bear certainly isn't the state of the art, but at least the paws are a good attempt!" or "The beanbag and mesh belly on this plush lizard is about the only interesting thing about it, but it's very ahead of its time and I'd love to see a similar technique on a bear." or "These growlers may not be the most technologically advanced way to do sounds in a teddy bear, but they have their advantages, even in the twenty-first century.") So yes, I'd waste fuck-you money on making the perfect "plush bear cub" and then producing them by the thousands.

That's my big impactful pet projects... but as far as quiet personal enjoyment... I guess a state of the art computer that's totally overkill for any game I actually play and beyond overkill for productivity software, just because the performance leap the last time I did that on someone else's dime at their insistence was incredible - my favourite still runs like crap on my current rig, but it runs like crap with fluffy animals and reflective water and incredible lighting for a game that old, and that game would run like crap on a military supercomputer, the hardware isn't the bottleneck - and some clothes I would enjoy instead of what I bought on Mum's limited dime at the thrift shops as a teenager, most of which fits okay but isn't all that cute or really my style anymore.

And, this is also big and impactful, but also very much a Thing I Need, If I Just Had The Cash. It'd be absolutely wonderful to have the money and time and generally resources that excess money can buy to be able to buy all sorts of weighted and compression gear sold for all kinds of primary purposes, to find a good hug vest for sensory seeking, and then review every single one as objectively as possible, and possibly even conduct a study/focus group with both neurodivergent and neurotypical volunteers that'd consist of having everyone identify their own sensory responses to pressure and compression, and then test and review each pressure tool in the study, and then all of that information would be put together as an analysis of off the shelf solutions for this particular sensory need, which I'd make available to those likely to be interested through every channel possible. So that no one has to waste that much money solving that problem again.

When I was about ten-eleven, I had this... piece of lady's underwear, very out of date design, but a fascinating sensory experience. My memory is hazy, but I believe it was given to me by an elderly female relative, whom my mother did not get on with because, as Mum says, she was crazy, and as I saw it even then, she had a tendency to get stuck in the past - her favourite sayings were "even a broken clock is right twice a day" and "it's not stupid if it works". I loved that thing, but I knew if anyone found out I had ever actually worn it, not just politely taken it to appease the crazy old bat and thrown it in the back of my closet and forgot about it, everyone would hit the roof and God only knew what my mum would do to the poor older lady she'd be primarily blaming and mad at, so I could only use it as a sensory tool when I was at home and unsupervised, which for a neurodivergent eldest child of a safety paranoid mother, who never post pregnancy ever worked more than part time, was not very often until I was like sixteen. If I had the time and connections and resources to track such a thing down and money to throw at recreating good childhood sensory experiences in general, I'd love to get one of those that'd fit me now - if you can even still get them, I think the one that Great-Aunt Helen gave me was an attic/storage closet find that belonged to some long dead relative back in those things' heyday. But then, if I had that kind of resources and connections and power, I could also pay a sensory tools company to make an adult sized hug vest, which is much less likely to cause me ND support needs problems when the person I rely on for a lot of help and cannot easily replace if she gets upset with me inevitably finds out, so. But then, if I have fuck-you money, I can hire people for all of the physical support that doesn't require her emotional understanding of me, just someone willing to do a household or life maintenance type task that's difficult or impossible for me, and the point of this particular project isn't "compression device", it's replicating the experience I had when I was a "young lady", as every grown woman around me put it then.

My dream currently is a bigger bed for me and my partner so we don't keep fighting for elbow space in the currebnt one in our sleep, we have slept in the current bed for over 20 years. I get that it's not just for enjoyement, but I don't need anything else.

I started doing these dreams of mine after getting a job with getting a nice reading chair a couple years ago and this year got us a new kitchen table.

I also dream of getting a house with a yard I could grow stuff in, but it's beyond my reach.

And there is one purely personal thing, plastic surgery for a surgical fuck up that was done to me long ago that left me with all sorts of body shame. It could be fixed with just money that I don't have. Fixing it would make going to the beach and stuff a lot easier for me mentally. I'd get that done if I had the means.

House would be the main thing, having space to do the stuff I like without cramming it all into a few rooms would be nice. I'd get a LOT of custom music gear made, i'd like a workshop and tools are expensive, i could do wonders with some industrial kitchen equipment at home, thst costs a lot. A house of my very own. A nice spacious one with a large garden so I can have some peace and quiet and privacy instead of being crammed into a noisy, crowded street like I am now. And never having to deal with the DWP again. Private medical care so I can get my issues improved without having to spend years at a time on NHS waiting lists. With this I would be content.

When I think about what I want to be doing, I wish I had the space and tooling to make things, but not hold on to them. I'd sell them or palm them off to someone. Things like a CNC machine or a lathe, or a forklift for puttering things around a workshop, would all be quite expensive. I don't really have an interest in keeping or storing the things I make, though it would be nice to see them in the community.

A nice couch, a jar of the best jam and peanut butter money can buy, a mp3 player, a type of ice cream maker, and a record player. I seriously want a nice a jam first and second a couch which can transform into a bed so I can sleep and chill in the same room

I'd buy a house in the area we're already living in, it's a nice area and the kids like the local school but I'd like some more garden and room for a small hand tool wood workshop. I guess I would be some kind of real estate magnate because I would also buy small apartments for each of my kids to live in once they move away from home.

I'd also buy two or three nice chef's knives. I would treat myself and go to the dentist for the first time in more than two decades. I would also get the Ozempic prescription that my doctor advice me to get if I can afford it. I might also splurge on a car where the front bumper is still fully attached and where the check engine light is not on, maybe even with one of those newfangled rear view cameras to make reversing less stressful. I wouldn't want a sports car though, I find speeding stressful and I'd just be afraid of getting into an accident.

I struggle to think of anything I'd want that isn't affordable. Even with inflated prices, how much is a top of the line PC these days? I can't imagine it'd be over $3k, and frankly I wouldn't even want something like that because it'd feel wasteful since mine is still fine. I suppose you can't take the money and exchange it for vacation at a 1:1? It'd be nice to have more time off. Also can't just buy a place because I don't think that qualifies as a "luxury".

Real answer is I'd probably find something I can resell for near the same value to have money I can use on something practical. Which I guess is still PC parts lol.

To echo @EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net there are legitimately tons of amazing pianos up for grabs at any given time. The reason is is because they've become rapidly depreciating assets since the widespread popularization of MIDI Keyboards. Simply put, they're too expensive to maintain reliably and take up too much space, so most rich folks are just happy to give em away for free just so it's out of their house.

Find a friend who can tune pianos for you and they can get you a free piano within a week. They might need to tune it for you though

I think I'd rather travel than have a lot of stuff, but if it has to be possessions. A nice rustic cabin to have a very well appointed woodworking shop with all antique hand tools. Then a nice antique rifle and over under shotgun (Beretta) that happen to be missing the stocks... Oh look over here, a prime selection of walnut! See where I'm going with this? I'd also build myself a 36' sail boat and fucking disappear into the wild blue.

I can do that first one, but it'll be in my garage. And my dad gave me a lot of antique tools that I've been gradually restoring. As for the boat, some day I hope to build a cedar strip canoe and that will have to suffice.

As for the car, I got to rent an exotic car for a birthday years ago and rip it around a track. But that's never going to be an option for a car that they only built 5 of.

All told, I partially live my dreams or they're within reach, and that's pretty nice. 😊
