My favorite part of this article:

Although “humbled” that Nolan has read her translation, she is blunt in her assessment of his creation: “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.” Wilson’s rhetorical climax has been widely circulated: “It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words. There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.”

I actually agree with Emily's review, I liked the movie but it was still just mid. I mean, three hours long in ancient Greece and nobody fucks? Come on man.

Didn't expect this to be a critique of a critic

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 6 points 5 hours ago

I didn't bother seeing it because I figured this sort of review would be how I would feel about it. It would be a big empty popcorn flick that is crowd pleasing, which I do not usually care for.

Goddam people be giving a shit about Hollywood movies. Couldn't be me.

[-] Athena5898@hexbear.net 23 points 13 hours ago

I'm just going to sit this movie out. I'm too autistic for this. Greek mythology was one of my gateways and I even took a class in college. I honestly wish I could turn my brain off. But I know the smallest thing would have my brain yapping at me like a tiny dog.

Its a fun watch but Calypso/Charlize Theron was definitely weakest part. Her scenes feels like some kind of fashion/perfume ad.

I wish it had more of the fantastical. Like the cyclops was really cool but I wanted more of that kind of shit.

[-] Formerlyfarman@hexbear.net 8 points 9 hours ago

I haven't watched, but I feel the cyclops should be more elephant looking, like the giants in Gambo thrones

A classics major doesn't like the changes and thinks that the writing in a modern Hollywood blockbuster is lacking shocked-pikachu

People are really mad about this review. I found it entirely reasonable, if harsher than I personally would have been.

copying my own criticisms from a previous megathread postI find it extremely annoying that despite being set in mycenaean greece, the movie depicts odysseus as extremely calvinist. the original poem is horny as hell, with our hero taking a break to spend an entire year banging a hot sorceress, while in this one the only sex scene is one where he has missionary sex with his wife and he seemingly spends the following 18 years completely celibate.

granted, it would have been annoying in a different way if Nolan had just had all of the female characters throwing themselves at odysseus, which is how this aspect of the story is depicted in pretty much every other movie adaptation, but I guess what bothers me about it is that rather than make the story element more interesting by giving more agency to female characters, the modern liberal filmmaker's response to feminist critiques of the films of the past is to simply excise sex altogether.

it's the general pattern with filmmakers like Nolan. he'll put lupita nyong'o as clytemnestra/helen, but he won't change the fact that those characters are depicted strictly as objects who are acted upon by men. the right winger's feral opposition to minority representation is the mirror image of the liberal's surface level inclusion of it, with both of them fundamentally missing the point in different ways.

that said i do like the plot thread that odysseus is reckoning with how his plot at troy was a terrible idea with long reaching consequences. the very first thing we see odysseus and his crew do after the war is burn down a village for the crime of running away when a bunch of heavily armed strangers arrived on their beach, and by the end of the film odysseus realizes that the "people from the sea" are more or less blowback from the trojan war. that's a cool way to adapt an old story to a modern framework.

it is unfortunately super idealistic. oddysseus' plan seemingly introduced the idea of violating xenia to the mycenaeans, and this idea's very existence spells the end for mycenaean civilization. the result is that the film positions the sack of Troy as bad because the greeks did it the wrong way, rather than being bad because murdering tons of people is bad. it's both the liberal and fascist critique of the war on terror, incidentally - libs think we just needed more precise munitions, while fascists think that we just needed more indiscreet bombing campaigns, and neither can engage with the fact that we shouldn't have been invading another country in the first place.

the original poem is horny as hell, you didn't notice it but your brain did

I'm jealous.

There were some callouts of the war as having essentially a fabricated justification so that Agamemnon could control shipping.

[-] Florn@hexbear.net 5 points 9 hours ago

Troy: Fall of a City did that way better though

[-] Gorillatactics@hexbear.net 37 points 16 hours ago

For most people a movie is 2 hours. For an academic whose specialty is being adapted into a major motion picture, its going to last a lifetime. A whole life time of clearing up misconceptions which didnt exist before. It seems nearly every person you meet asks about it, every book outside of your journal will have to spent a few pages on it.

[-] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 13 points 13 hours ago

I saw it last night in IMAX and was underwhelmed.

The writing in any Nolan film is always the weakest part, and if he wasn't so good at doing gimmicky shit that looks good, nobody would think his movies are good. He's good at making good looking scenes, but he sucks at telling a story with them, that's why he's a mid director at best

He's like a slightly higher-brow and more broody Michael Bay

ETA: doesn't mean I don't like his movies, you just have to know what to expect from a Nolan movie.

[-] Goblinmancer@hexbear.net 20 points 13 hours ago

Our AGE OF BRONZE IS COLLAPSING

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 13 points 13 hours ago

I've called him "middle brow Michael Bay" for the longest time. Entertaining movies with decent enough spectacle and composition, but yeah nothing profound lol.

[-] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 14 points 14 hours ago

He should find a decent or stellar writing partner and just focus on handling the directing...

[-] MarxMadness@hexbear.net 32 points 17 hours ago

And just like Bay, I'd say his movies are typically very entertaining, even if they aren't fine cinema.

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 11 points 15 hours ago

Oh yeah 100% agree. It's fun shlock to watch, and it's also true that the writing sucks in both directors' movies.

[-] Hermes@hexbear.net 6 points 12 hours ago

As someone who didn't watch this movie, is are there any in-lore explanations of why any of the relationships are technically legal and not gross?

[-] purpleworm@hexbear.net 16 points 16 hours ago
[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 15 points 15 hours ago

I watched it and it's a good watch, far less boring or brooding than I expected honestly. It's just bad writing considering the Odyssey.

[-] kristina@hexbear.net 26 points 15 hours ago

Where are the gay sex scenes Nolan :smuglord:

[-] Hermes@hexbear.net 8 points 12 hours ago

Isn't Nolan really averse to writing romance in general? (I could be wrong)

[-] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 16 hours ago

There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.

They need to follow the IASIP approach and shown full penetration

[-] orlando@hexbear.net 24 points 15 hours ago

he fights monsters on an island, comes back to the ship for full penetration. island penetration island penetration and this goes on and on and around and around for about two (2) and a half hours until the movie just sort of ends...

[-] D61@hexbear.net 36 points 17 hours ago

There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible

This was also my main problem with the film

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 30 points 17 hours ago

yeah i wanted all that hairy, oiled up greek fucking and they didn't even have any greeks

[-] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 14 points 15 hours ago

I'm sure Stav was available, somebody should have called him

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 9 points 14 hours ago

Everytime someone talks about the Odyseey we all should ask ourselves. Were is Stav ?
