I would like to formally give a prize to far right billionaire Peter Thiel. Biggest Shit stain on humanity, Congrats Mr Thiel you will be forever forgotten as soon as you pass out, but your stinking legacy will remain.

[-] Pip@feddit.org 51 points 16 hours ago

Okay, I won't share politico links anymore.

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago

Well, good. Genuine question, though: What finally changed your mind? Because plenty users of the Fediverse have repeatedly warned about Politico and their far right connections. This is on brand for Axel Springer. They‘ve been helping german Neo-Nazis to gain influence for decades and have been expanding globally for a while now. The whole thing is owned by a billionaire who is just as bad ad Thiel or Musk.

[-] Pip@feddit.org 3 points 15 hours ago

Well, the point you now make is not grounded in fact. They have not been helping German Nazis gain influence.

That is why this close connection is important new information.

Have you seen their tabloids and what they write about refugees? Bild is and has always been the largest "traditional media" voice for right wing populism and against left wing politics in Germany.

[-] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

I mean, my main point always was who owns Politico. But my warnings have been reportet for spam.

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 0 points 15 hours ago

Neither of you provided proof in either direction

[-] Alfredolin@lemmy.zip 3 points 8 hours ago

https://brokenbottleboy.substack.com/p/the-dark-history-of-the-telegraphs is on first sight a decent summary. Axel Springer IS trash.

[-] Marthirial@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

What's the name of the award? The Swasty?

Literally looks like a skin suit. Sweaty bastard really is the antichrist.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 51 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

OK I've heard often here on Lemmy that Springer is really bad and we should avoid Politico, but I wasn't quite sure I believed he is as bad as they claimed...

But obviously he is. ☹️ 😡
I guess I have to thank him for making it crystal clear.

[-] Koenig2005@feddit.org 14 points 15 hours ago

One important thing here: Springer and Axel Springer are two different publishers. Springer is a publisher for scientific books and has nothing to do with Axel Springer, which is the publisher behind problematic newspapers like Bild, Welt or Politico.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Springer is a publisher for scientific books

Isn't that Springer-Verlag?

[-] Koenig2005@feddit.org 4 points 14 hours ago

I'm not exactly sure but at least their logo just says Springer. Just wanted to point that out for people who might not know, because I was once confused about if they have anything to do with each other.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Sure that would be possible, I just thought that Springer is a relatively common name.
Apparently it has changed name at some point, so now it's called Springer Science+Business Media, with companies just called Springer.

I used a few books from Springer-Verlag back in the 90's, despite it's harder for me to read German than English, they had a few books that were absolutely stellar.
It would be very sad if those were related to Axel Springer.

[-] Successful_Try543@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 48 minutes ago)

It would be very sad if those were related to Axel Springer.

Fortunately they aren't. Axel Springer Verlag (Bild, Welt, Politico, …) is not related to Verlag Julius Springer (Springer Nature with several imprints, e.g. Springer-Verlag).

Fun* fact: Politico is the main news source for EU politicians, leaders and eurocrats. While you can make a tepid argument that their news coverage is ok their opinion pieces are biased, not exactly pro-EU and clearly informed by the Anglospheric view of things.

*not really

[-] eicker@lemmy.world 21 points 16 hours ago

This is why media ownership matters: When the people deciding what gets amplified are also celebrating political power brokers, it becomes harder to separate journalism from influence. Even if Politico’s newsroom stays independent, the optics alone are enough to make readers question where the lines really are.

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 10 points 16 hours ago

Exactly. It‘s billionaires giving each other awards for being awful to us.

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 32 points 18 hours ago

Fascists give fascist award to fellow fascist.

[-] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 10 points 16 hours ago

Why are all these cunts in charge of the media? Time for a reset. The 4th estate is meant to hold a mirror up to "the powerful" not fucking join them.

Easily resolved.

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

Billionaires are in charge of most media these days. The Epstein class is one big swamp covering for each other‘s atrocities.

[-] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 3 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

Part of this is people expect to journalism to be a profitable business and it often isn't and instead of reckoning with that and figuring out how to reliably fund journalism anyways we leave it for the rich to buy up and fiddle with disastrously.

[-] Melchior@feddit.org 3 points 15 hours ago

Partly they bought themself media companies, but also most media makes most of their money from ads and guess who the rich companies like. Also when you are successful with a media company, you end up rich, which then aligns your interest with the rich.

Also it is not resolved easily. Public broadcasters tend to be aligned with politicans, which makes them fairly centrist. There are some media companies run by foundations and the like and that seems to work okay.

[-] Melchior@feddit.org 0 points 13 hours ago

If you just kill the media billionaires, the current system will just create new ones. Going for a revolution is not at all easy and even that has a long history of ending up with a system, which is very similar to the previous one, just with different assholes.

System change is not easy at all.

[-] derAbsender@piefed.social 9 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

This newspaper is an organ of infamy. It is wrong to read them. Someone who contributes to this newspaper is absolutely socially unacceptable. It would be a mistake to be friendly or even polite to one of its editors. You have to be as unfriendly to them as the law allows. It's bad people who do the wrong thing.

Max Goldt on BILD the main crime of Axel Springer, but applicable to all its printed waste.

[-] fisch@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Honestly, nobody cares about some Axel fucking Springer price.

[-] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
