that's five times the yearly maximum cost for healthcare here

depends, are you okay with waiting seven months for actual help?

i got a herniated disc a few years ago and while i did get something for the pain after a few weeks, by the time i got booked for an mri it had healed on its own.

That's hilarious. I (USA) need an endocrinologist. Best appointment I can get is January.

yeah, I (USA) have been trying to get in to see this internal medicine specialist in Stockton for five years now. His wait list is that long.

We have a professional relationship as well so i know he's not just blowing me off, but i'm getting tired boss. I think he's just triaged me to the end of the list (i survived this long) until I tell them I'm out of patience.

Keep in mind that waiting for 7 months is better than not going at all. lol
Many Americans sinply don't go unless it's an emergency.

A single trip to the psych office has a $200 co-pay per visit where I am, and that's with insurance.

Even the people in the US who recognize their issues and want help for them are priced out.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 3 points 2 weeks ago

i paid 150kr per visit (≈11€) and i when i hit 1200 they sent me a card i can show instead of paying, valid for however many months are left until it's been a year since the first visit.

That doesn't sound too bad (yes I'm American 😭)

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 29 points 2 weeks ago

This is so much wrong. Doctor will not ask the patient to go out like that! They will charge consultation fee on your way out.

America moment

[-] Zwiebel@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Only if you have private insurance

[-] Canconda@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

More like only if you live in America.

This is legitimately the first response that comes to mind when I’m at a doctor’s appointment that I personally asked for.
Like, I don’t want to bother this nice lady with my problems. I’m sure she has better things to do than having to listen to me.

[-] Broadfern@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

She wants to help you! That’s the whole reason she’s there in that room with you. You deserve to take up space, and have your concerns attended to /gen /pos

[-] Tess@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

Aw, thanks. It's just my default behavior.
It takes a moment, and then I'll remember why I'm actually there. But the impulse to not want to be a bother to anyone runs deep :)

Literally the dumbest thing I hear MDs say when I'm legit there for a reason. Like c'mon now.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

If it's a doctor I know well, then I open with, "not as good as she could be". If it's some total stranger, I go with "dunno, hoping you could tell me it's not as bad as I think".

[-] sunbytes@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I usually go with

"Aha! That's a trick question!"

And tap the side of my head. Like the meme guy.
