The Governance of China Vol. 5
How is it?
It is a nice read. If you've read Vols 1-4 there isn't anything truly surprising in this one. It mainly shows that they are on the same track that they've been on. One of the nicer things to see in this volume was relating to their views on the social responsibilities of private sector businesses. Also how finance is supposed to provide a service rather than just accumulating wealth.
i should get to reading those
Finally finished Imperialism, the highest stage of capitalism. Needed to watch some videos on it as well because it's a difficult read, so I recommend Red Pen's video on it.
Started reading Historical Materialism by Stalin which is short, but an amazing read to help me understand the Marxism worldview in full.
Keep in mind that imperialism encompasses more than those five points that Lenin made. Consider the whole book and what he's driving at.
I'm trying, I might have to re-read it at a later date.
Ofc, good idea, comrade
Started On Contradiction by Mao Zedong! Plus I'm a few chapters into David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
I read a short history of the Black Panther party and occasional stuff from Lenin (including his opinion on working with the trade unions). It is nice to get back into reading.
Making headway into Capital Vol 2, some 350 pages in or so now. I've gotten really interested in the monetary system so I'm really motivated to read economic theory :D
I also read Socialism in Power by Roland Boer. Heavy recommend for an intro to socialist governance!
Any tips on reading? I tend to take notes and pay attention while reading theory so it takes me forever to finish anything. I am also a medstudent so i am busy most of the time
I hope this helps.
Well maybe just figure out what really needs to be memorized and what is not necessary for you (you do not need to know exact statistics if you are just trying to understand a Marxist work)
I nearly always skim the numbers if they aren't just interesting statistics to be honest, assuming that the point is clear enough without me needing to fact-check the math
Highlight with a 4 color pen in outer margins on each page. Red important, blue interesting, green for your own thoughts, black for notes which don't fit into any of the categories. Write as short as you can notes in top and bottom margins. If I use an e-reader I just highlight instead of red and write down notes after reading chapters or finishing the book. When you're done reading, it's great if you try to find a way to use that knowledge - blogpost or article, video, podcast, conversations in real life, real life politics, anything to make you actually use it and remember.
Edit: Having books easily accessible, setting goals for reading sessions, and not subvocalizing for hard texts are also good tips. By reading goals I mostly mean "Today I would like to read X pages or for X minutes because I know I have time, and I know that if I read that much I'll be good to read more tomorrow", not "I'm gonna force myself to read Y everyday no matter what" - build a habit, not an obligation. I would also say having a hard text, like capital, that you need to work through and a easier text that you can just read whenever is a good pairing.
Thanks for the recommendation.
I just bought "Who paid the Pipers of Western Marxism" after I came into contact with a Gegenstandpunkt person and discovered what Western Marxism is. Currently I'm also finishing reading Rosa Luxemburg's Reform or Revolution and likely will read Lenin's book of the same topic later. I'm also kinda struggling with applying Historical and Dialectical Materialism on things on my own. I don't quite seem to be able to fully understand it sadly, but I'm trying.
Just starting A Farewell To Arms
That's what I said to ARMS after I played it for five minutes.
Try better with your new IPs next time, Nintendo!

UN 2026 Industrial Development Report
Any good?
I think you could get a lot out of reading it. It does a good job so far broadcasting the disproportionate development and investment in Global South countries and highlights a little bit how China is leading the entire East Asia and Pacific region towards further industrialization. The report also has an interesting upcoming chapter on how to facilitate the industrialization of Global South countries in an energy-efficient manner.
With that being said, it is the UN. They do a decent job of highlighting issues and global inequality, but fall short of identifying how and why this system is furiously upheld despite these existential challenges.
Of course, and I don't expect it to really identify the hows and whys of the system's failure.
It's good that it's still educational and elucidating.
Still WITBD... I hate blaming shit on ADHD simply but it really does not help. I am constantly 'on edge' about if I am absorbing the information- if I don't recall a point immediately, I feel like I failed. Such a huge anxiety that I will miss something or not 'absorb' it, leading to constant note taking. Every paragraph I feel like I have to try and summarize and understand it uniquely from everything else.
No Longer Human and A Hundred years of Solitude ^w^
Been reading The Great Gatsby. A bit boring
It is rather boring.
It is that post-war book, right?
Yeah
What makes it boring? I never read it.
Oh, it may have been the fact that I had to read it for school.
It's a rather short novel, but I felt that it was kinda one-note and not much happened beyond the titular Gatsby character dying in the end.
starting Rebel Cities by David Harvey
I'm thinking of reading The First Law trilogy based off of the suggestions of another comrade.
Has anyone else read this?
I have never heard of it :0
Written by Joe Abercrombie
Basically inspired by ASOIAF (A Song of Ice and Fire) but better.
ASOIAF is the book series that the TV show Game of Thrones is based off of.
The First Law trilogy and its sequel trilogy have politics and intrigue in a "grimdark" setting.
Dunno much about it beyond the multiple POVs.
Might go in blind.
