What annoys me is that all he basically said was that he believes in the Drake Equation. Not that we have encountered aliens or have definite proof of their existence; just that with how big the universe is and how much diverse life exists on this one rock, there's no way there isn't life elsewhere on other rocks somewhere.
But we don't know all the variables for the Drake equation! It's still possible that we're alone in the observable universe.
