The theme for the event was "90s music." As a 90s kid, I just... shake my head. There's so much good music to choose from that decade, and yet they chose to make AI slop instead.
I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.

they didn't want to pay for it. it's expensive to license music, esp across multiple countries and events. each skater basically has to hire a copyright lawyer to file all the paperwork for them.
none of this was an issue until recently... people didn't care if they used their music for the obscure sport of figure skating. now they sue you for doing so. it's add tons of cost and legal bullshit for skaters, so why even bother? just use uncopyrighted music for free and don't get sued.
blame greedy lawyers and record companies who decided they needed a 'slice' of the tiny sport of figure skating and now want to sue skaters for 5-6 figure sums. 'untapped market' of exploiting teenage girls and competitive professionals.
This is the comment and argument everyone should be making about this. They wouldn't be using an AI song in the first place if it weren't for corporate greed, the usual villain behind the mask.
and they stole the music to train the ai as well.
Or, they could have reached out to indie bands in their genre of choice. I've no doubt there are tons of small bands out there who would love having their work used in the Olympics, it'd be one of the rare "do it free/cheap for the exposure" deals that might be actually worth it.
But that'd take a little bit more work than jerking off the theft slop machine, so fuck it, right? /s
So youve never heard of licensing then.
Why even skate? Just generate a video of it, then have AI watch it for you and summarize what it saw in 160 characters or less.
A ~2mn part of the Olympics opening ceremony had an AI video so I don't think the IOC would even care 🤷♂️
Too bad there's no ruling against that. The Olympic committee are just gonna let it slide like the spineless puddles of too they are.
Ahhh yes. Fuck AI, instead we should make teenagers pay licensing fees if they want any chance of achieving their dream. This is a problem solely created by corporate assholes who want to make a buck.
I’m more shocked it’s only been 1.
Fuck I.C.E.
Considering another skater is getting called out for copyright problems when she did her due diligence to clear rights — you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

So to avoid that situation they are using AI generated music, made by an AI which is trained on unlicensed music because the AI companies don't give a crap. Nice.
is classical music good for skating? they could have used that
And then the orchestra that recorded it would possibly sue them for copyright infringement. Just because the sheet music is out of copyright doesn’t mean the recording is.
Maybe they could dig through some old 78s or hire a piano player to work around that.
Before 10 or 15 years ago you weren't allowed music with voices, and most people used classical.
Just get a string quartet to follow you around on the ice and play live. I'd pay to see that
yeah I was thinking of hiring a performer, although I don't know how expensive that would be vs getting rights to some that's already there
There's a theme, it was 90's music.
The "must hate on ai" train is to thick here to understand such subtleties as licensing and rights restrictions. Ironic isnt it
