The mayor of Portland, Oregon, demanded U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement leave his city after federal agents launched tear gas at a crowd of demonstrators — including young children — outside an ICE facility during a weekend protest that he characterized as peaceful.

Witnesses said agents deployed tear gas, pepper balls and rubber bullets as thousands of marchers arrived at the South Waterfront facility on Saturday. Erin Hoover Barnett, a former OregonLive reporter who joined the protest, said she was about 100 yards (90 meters) from the building when “what looked like two guys with rocket launchers” started dousing the crowd with gas.

“To be among parents frantically trying to tend to little children in strollers, people using motorized carts trying to navigate as the rest of us staggered in retreat, unsure of how to get to safety, was terrifying,” Barnett wrote in an email to OregonLive.

'Murica land of the free ... if you follow the fascist authority, otherwise no protesting allowed.

Sad watching pouring water on crying kids' eyes.

Also, the Eugene January 30 story is worth looking into. There's a video that shows ICE breaking a window before the tear gas hits. I don't know if there was already a window broken, but as far as I've seen: ICE smashed it's own building window as an excuse to gas protestors

Sad watching pouring water on crying kids' eyes.

I thought you were supposed to use milk.

[-] nwtreeoctopus@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

Nah. Milk doesn't work any better than water. It's supposed to help with pepper spray, though.

Do NOT put milk (or any other animal excretions) in your eyes. Milk contains bacteria which can infect your abraded corneas.

This reminds me of the medieval folk remedy of putting cow dung on open wounds.

[-] lapping6596@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I thought that was the point of pasturization?

[-] yeahiknow3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Pasteurization reduces the bacterial load, but milk is far from sterile (given the cruel extraction process, it literally contains puss) and has to be kept refrigerated for a reason.

The Secretary of Health and Human Services has told me that I should use raw milk... for strength?

demand

It's only a demand if you have a stick ready when the demand gets ignored.

Do you have a stick? If not, it's nothing more but a frustrated plea

Don't tell them to leave! Charge them with assault and arrest them!

[-] whereIsTamara@lemmy.org 28 points 4 days ago

He makes demands but he won’t use cops to force them out or do anything to block access to the building. So, he’s really just a poseur.

[-] Fedizen@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

You don't use the cops. Ask the sanitation workers to not pick up trash from the site. Turn off the water and power to the building. ICE has been violating the law. It doesn't matter how much money they have, they aren't entitled to the city's resources. Can't obey illegal orders if you can't recieve them.

[-] whereIsTamara@lemmy.org 11 points 4 days ago

Just put city busses in a fence around the ice building and deny tow truck access. The road around that building is perfect for this.

And we can still use the cops to our advantage if we are smart about it. Let’s not refuse to use a tool because we don’t like it.

[-] Fedizen@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

You can't trust the cops and ICE not to work together. There's going to be fascists in both groups. So any command you give the cops will be immediately known to ICE and they have far more budget than most cities.

This is why the main way to deal with it would be to other city workers and then have the cops cover them if there's an issue. Keep the cops mostly in the dark.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 3 days ago

Generally true, but I'm hearing that regular cops are not pleased with the tactics of the ICE Apes. Literally everyone in a law enforcement category, right on up to the military, are disgusted by these idiots. The few cops that agree with them have been getting fat signing bonuses and lots of perks to join ICE, clearing the worst from the ranks.

[-] whereIsTamara@lemmy.org 4 points 4 days ago

You can tell a cop to go arrest an ice agent and if they don’t they lose their job. It’s doesn’t matter if they get a heads up, the building is right there.

I get that you’re saying ACAB, and yes I agree, but you’re losing an entire very powerful tool just because you thumb your nose at them.

This is one of the reasons Portland is going to be decimated by ICE before the midterms.

[-] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Damn, that's really smart. That would probably work.

[-] j_elgato@leminal.space 11 points 4 days ago

The police exist to protect the wealth and assets of property owners, not to serve the public trust.

Besides, the police in Portland are especially bad when it comes to anything, well, anything other than cracking down on non-violent protesters.

[-] bear@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 days ago

I'm not expecting any real city pushback.

During the BLM protests the downtown Portland federal building put steel fences in the street circling the whole block. Which is city property, and illegal without permits.

The city tried to fine them, but did nothing else to resolve the issue.

[-] cogman@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

ICE is assaulting citizens. They shouldn't even have tear gas and pepper spray. It's not their job to do crowd control. That's the job of the local pd or national guard.

[-] Taldan@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Those roads are looking rough. I think they need to resurface the whole block. All 4 roads around the building look bad. Might take a while for construction to finish

These politicians need some creativity. Words mean nothing to these fascists. Laws mean nothing to them

ICE is gonna get their shit rocked in Portland.
