Dems wanted a healthy population to save money, Republicans want a healthy population so they can join the military to kill and die for imperial interest.

[-] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 42 points 3 days ago

Don’t forget ‘and to work longer’!

[-] cogman@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago

Republicans want a dumb population to make more republicans. Malnutrition definitely has negative impacts on education.

[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 17 points 3 days ago

FWIW that’s what the national school lunch / free lunch program was largely about to begin with 🫠

Work there sometime and watch starving kids in many districts.

Healthy working class to exploit. Not that that means you should be unhealthy as an anti imperialist act. A healthy, informed working class is the most likely to have a successful revolt.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 7 points 3 days ago

RFK made a statement a while ago about eating healthier and less processed foods, which is completely expected.

What wasnt expected or normal is him listing military readiness as a primary reason for a healthy population. I can't believe I haven't seen anything about people disecting that section of the statement.

[-] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

No, Republicans don't want a healthy population. They'll like about it to make it sound like it's Dems fault, but none of Republican policy positions actually promote health. They don't support informed eating (see RFKjr's garbage food pyramid), or affordable health care, they want people to work more and longer, they want them stressed with zero down time, drinking poisoned water and contaminated food, breathing polluted air, and vulnerable to eradicated diseases.

[-] scathliath@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

And paying for health insurance; come on, their lobby doesn't spend so much money on Republican donors to be forgotten about!

[-] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 93 points 3 days ago

Start physical education earlier? PE and playground time type shit started in preschool.

If you want to bring down medical costs pay them directly through the government and ban insurance companies.

Drug company: "We're going to raise the price of drug A."

Proper response: "If you raise the price of your drug we'll ignore your patent and sell it for half the cost so you lose sales"

Medical costs would fall and we'd have a healthier society

[-] moistclump@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Can we do this AND get kids healthy lunches because it’s the right thing to do?

[-] Asafum@lemmy.world 55 points 3 days ago

Democrats: (do literally anything.)

Republicans: "OMG THEY'RE RADICAL LEFTIST COMMUNISTS!!"

[-] GladiusB@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Does the same thing 10 years later and say it's for their protection. I'm looking at you mask mandates.

[-] DannyMac@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

At this point, I think democrats could use some reverse psychology on them. Here's what democrats should do: "We're going to violently deport all undocumented immigrants, revoke all forms of private and public healthcare, increase police funding by 2000%, force all children into being home schooled, force women to all be trad wives, increase military funding by 2000%, require all citizens to have access to firearms regardless of legal status, and remove all mass transit in favor of more cars." Think of the utopia we'd become!

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

the democrats are too afraid of appearing mean and unhinged.

[-] BossDj@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

Ever since Howard Dean got excited once

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The democrats obsession with 'professionalism' is what alienates them from a broader voter base. They refuse to let their candidates be relatable to average people.

A 'dumb yokel' democrat would be a presidential winner. Carter, Clinton, Obama all won on charm, not policy.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 3 days ago

What dems are you talking about here?

Pretty sure that biden increased deportations during his term. That obomber didn't do shit for public healthcare. That libs fully support compulsory education, the MIC, car dependency, etc...

It's supposed to be sarcasm, but realistically you're just describing the dem platform.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Democrats: NOO!!!! We're fully capitalist! Let's collaborate and work together, fash buddies!

[-] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 21 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Here's the thing though. Democrats want this as an add-on to universal public health insurance, because health insurance is considered a universal right, and physical and health education help managing the costs. Republicans want it instead of public health insurance, because they consider staying healthy to be an individual responsibility that the state should not be involved in, and "just exercise and eat healthy" is their response to people complaining about cuts in the healthcare system.

[-] OpenPassageways@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

Do Democrats want universal public health insurance? Or does the left want universal public health insurance?

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

A bunch of them do, yes. Democratic party is a coalition of a lot of smaller groups that want a lot of different things.

[-] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

My point was that catching Republicans in this seeming contradiction isn't the "gotcha" that people think it is, because they advertise health and exercise for very different reasons, namely to strip away the last bits of public health insurance that Americans still have.

You're probably right in that the left is more united about reforming health insurance than Democrats are overall. But it's important not to miss the big picture.

[-] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The big picture is health insurance and food corporations have captured our political and legal process, I agree. It needs completely rooting out, and anyone against it, republican or democrat, should be removed from office. Citizens United and any other form of legal corporate money in politics needs gutting.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

Do Democrats want universal public health insurance?

I'll take the bait and answer with the obvious: No.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Republicans want it

lol nah. It's just some guy on xitter.

To be fair, Republicans would have called her a radical commie for saying that, and also for not saying it. And for saying something different.

[-] Furbag@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

"What if instead of the communist atheist deep state vax jab, we just expose people to a weakened version of the coronavirus? 🤔"

[-] PugJesus@piefed.social 25 points 3 days ago

It doesn't matter. None of them care. They'll shrug it off.

Principles mean nothing to GOP voters.

[-] smh@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I will say the presidential fitness tests were awful to go through, as someone that didn't do well on them. Nothing we did in PE class prepared us for pull ups or situps, so it was always me laying on my back and one of the cheerleaders holding my feet down, encouraging me to do one situp.

I've never done a situp in my life. I first started trying at home sometime before 4th grade--I remember the room I lay in, trying my hardest. We moved between 3rd and 4th grade.

[-] eupraxia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago

Yeah, imo the way those are usually done in schools is worse than useless. Nobody teaches you how to e.g. do a pull-up much less how to progress up to one if you can't. So a lot of kids get tests thrown at them they can't pass, then just move on with the idea that they're physically inferior in some way.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I want to see Trump passing this presidential fitness test first...

If their overlords give them a poop cake, they happily eat them, if people who actually care for them give them a healthy meal, they'll throw it to the ground, claiming "I'm not part of the system", and "I'm an adult" while acting like children.

[-] ickplant@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

… I go to my favorite hot dog stand

And the dude says,

"You come here all the time! Here's one for free"

I said, "Man! What I look like? A charity case?"

… I took it and threw it on the ground!

I don't need your handouts!

I'm an adult!

Please!

You can't buy me hot dog, man!

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Can your president pass his own fitness test?

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago
[-] alternategait@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I've said it about George. I've said it about Hillary. I've thought it about the Kennedys. I'll say it about Michelle: I do not want a single family to have an outsized hold on our politics. Literally anyone else with similar stances.

[-] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 1 points 2 days ago

I know Michelle polls well, but I have never once gotten the impression she has any interest in holding office.
