Genuinely I wish someone would put sugar into their concrete, like we need more direct protest of this shit

[-] Know_not_Scotty_does@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago

This is in the US, we only have corn syrup.

It's got what concrete craves, electrolytes

Maybe. How much can a banana possibly cost?

If you look at the city of Tehran, right now, they are talking of evacuating a city of 15 million souls because - no more water.

If reports are true, much of the us southwest is only a fee years and one bad rain season away from the same fate.

Allowing these monstrosities to consume all your potable water just seems like madness.

[-] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 months ago

While much of what I you say is true, Iran's water mismanagement is legendary

[-] massacre@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Is it worse than the USSR cotton fields?

[-] Aljernon@lemmy.today 5 points 2 months ago

The fact that these even consume water is madness. Like running coolant to a radiator is just a few dollars too much electricity for these bean counters.

[-] jonjuan@programming.dev -5 points 2 months ago

Phoenixthis weekend just had its biggest rainfall on record.

[-] TheBat@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Raining isn't same as managing.

Rainfall is not going to do anything for the people if the water ends up in the ocean. It needs to be saved and seeped into the ground.

And they are building 27 of these fucking things around my area with no oversight from the community. There was supposed to be meeting with the company building one in Coweta, it was going be a chance for the public to speak out. But company canceled the meeting.

City council approved this data center without and of the community input.

Sugar is horrible for concrete, it completely stops it from setting in the right amount (which is very little for a lot of concrete) and even if it's too little, the concrete is definitely weakened, so whatever you do, please do not add any sugar to the concrete in your protests, no soda thrown into the liquid concrete or anything of the sort, we don't want to cause damage to those buildings, right?

[-] crusa187@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Similar story here, Google is building one nearby and it got approved with no announcement and no community input. They are using our drinking water supply for cooling, and won’t say how much water they anticipate using at capacity. We have a lawsuit ongoing to try to get them to tell us how much of our water they will use, and they’re refusing on grounds that it’s confidential corporate data.

It’s a total mess, and such a waste of valuable resources.

There was an article recently about Zuck and how he's apparently running a school out of his house (compound). His very rich neighbors have been complaining and reporting it for years and nothing has been done. There is a level of wealth and power that people we think of as wealthy and powerful can't even imagine. That's what we're all up against. The whole of the upper class can't even contain these people, what chance do we little people have? There may have been a time where the people really did hold the power, but if it ever did exist, it is behind us. Not to be a doomer about it. I really do think we can and do have an effect, but things are rough right now. Hard not to feel defeatist.

[-] Almacca@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago

...what chance do we little people have...

There's way more of us.

Sounds like you need to give your city council hell.

I watched the video included with the article. One of those poor, poor seniors was asked whether she was kept informed. She said no, saying she only gets updates from the internet and her Facebook.

I'm not the first to ever say it, but there's a clear lack of infrastructure when someone still turns to the very same company's platform for updates and barely knows what's going on. There's no respect for community here, no involvement of stakeholders, no thought to the people who live there. For what? A corporate installation that may be built on fuddy duddy accounting to keep up appearances for an AI Bubble?

[-] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 months ago

Its by design. This is another gilded age.

[-] Zirconium@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

You saw the same video where the kids can't even use the playground because the truck drivers can't stay on the road

Place sure is big. So big that I wouldn't be surprised if some stray long range bullets didn't end up coming down on the property every so often by pure chance. There's all these unsafe desert yokels out hunting and shooting all the time. Wouldn't that put a damper on operations. Workers and construction crews having to run for cover as bullets crack over head. Then having to evacuate, shut down and let the police comb the place top to bottom collecting bullet fragments.

Then when everything is back to normal what if it happened again? And again? and again? It's a wonder they could get any work done at all. And It'd be a heck a of a thing to protect against if the shots came from different places every time.

They'd about have to have a Groom lake-size security buffer around every single one of these places. Boy wouldn't that get expensive.

And don't get me started on the damage that incendiary/tracer or heavy steel penetration rounds would do to all those pipes, machinery and sensitive coolant systems.

Unrelated, but everyone should check out some of those lower cost 50 BMG rifles that are out now. Those sure are neat.

[-] Darkness343@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Hey, if they want water so much, why don't we help them out?

Let's pour some buckets inside the servers to help them cool even better!
