What's high income 30k a year or more? Such a joke...

The $2,000 dividend could come in lots of forms, in lots of ways, George," Bessent told anchor George Stephanopoulos. "You know, it could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president's agenda -- you know, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, deductibility of auto loans."

Oh so no money for you

[-] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 29 points 3 months ago

So what this means is there will be no $2000 check. It will just be "hidden" relief that is almost impossible to actually see and verify. Cool cool cool

[-] Joeffect@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

That's what I get out of it... something they can say they did... but its actually nothing...

These are all measures which reinforce some negative aspects of US economy, apart from social security taxes.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 12 points 3 months ago

Great, so the four people who can itemize tips will benefit.

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

They want to let us deduct our auto loans? I haven't heard that one yet. My car payment is crazy high though lol

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 84 points 3 months ago

I'll add that to my $5,000 DOGE dividend. Why do news outlets report what he says when he's obviously lying?

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 24 points 3 months ago

I’ll bet money that he’s going to actually try to do this.

Remember when Congress voted to send Americans assistance checks during the pandemic — and Trump plastered his name all over those checks for shameless political points?

This guy 100% wants to send out “Trump” checks again.

Trump steals people's money, then gives some back to them, and that's supposed to pacify them?
How about not stealing people's money to begin with?

[-] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 37 points 3 months ago

and that's supposed to pacify them?

Every single MAGAt will instantly forget any complaints the second they have a check in hand.

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 21 points 3 months ago

It doesn't actually sound like anyone will get a check "lots of ways" probably means it's never going to happen, but all the MAGAs will point to him just saying this and gushing about how generous he is

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 9 points 3 months ago

That's weird, because the COVID checks were insanely popular and just giving everyone a $2000 check with his name on it would be great politics. I guess it's good they're doing it differently.

$2000 a person won't even offset the additional cost from the ACA subsidy reduction. So, a one-time check that would only cover several months of the recurring cost that he's given us.

[-] henfredemars@infosec.pub 24 points 3 months ago

When you’re that rich, $2000 and $0 are basically the same. It’s a pittance for what they see as an underclass of poors.

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 14 points 3 months ago

I think a lot of people don't get this.

Imagine there's something that you want--maybe a lot, maybe only a little. What that something is doesn't matter.

What amount of money would you consider to be a negligible amount for you to spend to get that thing you want? Maybe it's a few dollars or maybe it's as little as 10 cents. For me, now that I am reasonably comfortable, anything that only costs about a dollar, I consider to basically be free.

This is how the wealthy view anything that is "only" in the thousands of dollars.

It also won't make up for the small businesses that went under because their margins disappeared.

[-] Tempus_Fugit@midwest.social 43 points 3 months ago

Lol, bet he's only saying this so when the Supreme Court comes down on his illegal tariffs he can say he was going to give us that money.

[-] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 25 points 3 months ago

Technically, If the Supreme Court rules that his tariffs were illegal to begin with, he will be expected to reimburse everyone affected. That may be all this is. He's just trying to spin it as spontaneous generosity, rather than a court ordered obligation.

[-] henfredemars@infosec.pub 8 points 3 months ago

I was just about to, but you interrupted me!

How about you use that money to pay SNAP instead?

[-] ninj4geek@lemmy.wtf 11 points 3 months ago

Because he can say this and it won't happen.

[-] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 28 points 3 months ago

Not happening

[-] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 27 points 3 months ago

i believe it when i see it. he's announced the same thing back in may and nothing happened.

In two weeks. Very special. Don't want to say much now but it's gonna be really special.

[-] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

The Trump 2 week chicken taco timeline.

He started with "solving crime in Chicago in 1 day"

Then they had a Medicare plan just a week away, but he learned that that was too close for the right wing spin machine.

[-] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

To be fair, he has followed through on his promise to be a "dictator on day 1".

[-] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 24 points 3 months ago

Just ballparking that there are 250 million non-high-earners, at $2k a pop that's $500 billion. Two thousand dollars won't change anyone's life, but $500bn is a big chunk of the federal budget.

[-] shiroininja@lemmy.world 23 points 3 months ago
[-] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 23 points 3 months ago

Sorry, I didn't mean to trivialize that amount of money.

Is this dividend in the room with us right now?

[-] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 months ago

He has concepts of a dividend.

[-] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 21 points 3 months ago

He says a lot of things. Meanwhile he's gone out of his way repeatedly to try to starve millions of people.

[-] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 20 points 3 months ago

The ultra wealthy already got their 'tariff dividend', in the form of not tax breaks and a discrete heads-up of when to play the market to real maybe amounts of extra wealth.

As for the rest, this offer is just more bullshit. If it does surface (which is very unlikely) there will be some strings attached. And it will in no way fully compensate most people for the turmoil caused by these tariffs.

[-] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 months ago

So this is where snap money has gone too

[-] BotsRuinedEverything@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

So a $2k decrease in taxes using some kind of unspecified math, while cost of living increases by triple that number.

How about "There is Zero Evidence of $2000 Trump Checks Beyond Mere Words" as the headline ABC? Christ. Or "Trump Floats Idea of $2000 Checks, Or Maybe It's a Tax Rebate, Or Maybe Nothing, Or Maybe He Just Says Shit and We Eat It Up Every Time. Who Cares? Just Stay Scared and Don't Change That Dial!"

[-] solrize@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 months ago

Also hand out cash to people for their medical bills bypassing insurance companies:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15272123/donald-trump-healthcare-plan-change.html

Obvs that's a lot worse than it sounds.

[-] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 11 points 3 months ago

I’ll take it the way I took his stupid ass signed pandemic check. It’s not gonna make me hate the fucker any less, and I’m not stupid enough to think the amount of money the average person has lost on these fucking tariffs is less than $2000. So yeah, pay me to keep the same opinion of you and your policies, shithead.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 6 points 3 months ago

I donated mine 50/50 to Planned Parenthood and SPLC. I don't want his blood money.

[-] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 months ago

I’m glad that’s a financial option for you

[-] theoneandonlyeggboi@lemmings.world 9 points 3 months ago

Where exactly does that money come from? We end up paying more for it in the end due to inflation and it all trickles up as we spend it.

We need to raise taxes on the ruling class. There is no other way.

[-] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 months ago

Lolz, for them it’s $5,000.
