Rent parties are back! Just without the jazz, and food, and booze, and community... But at least it's monetized for a tech CEO! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent_party

[-] Drusas@fedia.io 14 points 4 months ago

You should post that to the Wikipedia community.

How are we the best country again?

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 33 points 4 months ago

How are we the best country again?

It's a lie that Americans have been telling themselves for a few centuries.

[-] assembly@lemmy.world 26 points 4 months ago

I don’t think we were ever literally the best country, those tend to be the nordics. I believe (and I guess I should do some research) that “the greatest country on earth” was a marketing slogan. Like the local coffee shop that says they have the best coffee in the country or something. It was a very successful marketing campaign considering it’s still being believed and discussed.

[-] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 20 points 4 months ago

Ya but tell that to a MAGA. they'll lose their fucking mind.

[-] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 19 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Then tell them Trump has never won an election against a man.

Edit: ~~They~~ Then

[-] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Also, that he's the first president to be openly cucked. We all know his wife is getting it from someone else.

[-] molestme247@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Isn't Baron actually the old Canadian PM'S kid? Looks a lot like him, and explain trump hatin on him

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

There really is no best, but maybe at some point we were among the best. Sure as shit not now though.

[-] gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 4 months ago

Well at least we're great, again.

Buckle up fam. This is a nation of dimwitted dumbfucks. It's not going to get any better because we're too stupid to vote for it to get better.

[-] stinky@redlemmy.com 13 points 4 months ago

Don't blame the voters. They're idiots who are struggling to make ends meet. Blame the people in power who manipulate vulnerable people into doing bad things. The solution to our problem is NOT more citizens without rights.

[-] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

No, I will blame the voters.

[-] stinky@redlemmy.com 6 points 4 months ago

Then you're a willing member of a country divided, and you let him win.

On my daily commute, I would normally pass 2 or 3 cars for sale parked out in people's front yards. Last I counted, that number was 12. More if I were to include other things suddenly for sale, like boats, bikes, and golf carts.

[-] akilou@sh.itjust.works 32 points 4 months ago

Who are they getting money from? Other people who can't afford groceries? We're just all buying each other groceries that one of us can afford?

[-] JoshuaFalken@lemmy.world 31 points 4 months ago

Likely situations where a person will be okay this month so they send another $20 or so and maybe a few months down the line, they are the one that needs a bit of help.

It's like the proverb, "it takes a village", only commoditized.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 35 points 4 months ago

Sounds like socialism to me.

Maybe we need a bigger version, funded by those who won't miss the money.

Can I just point out that the middleman taking a commission adds no value to this transaction. I can give a neighbor a can of beans directly and anonymously through my neighborhood little free pantry.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago

When I used GoFundMe a few weeks ago, paying them was optional. It's possible they were lying but they made it seem like I could pay them as little as I wanted and if I chose 0, all my money would go to the person/org I'm trying to support. I think they defaulted it to 5% but allowed me to choose 0. I honestly think supporting gofundme isn't a bad idea (they build and maintain software and infrastructure to make donations easy) but in that case I wanted the recipient to get it all.

[-] Hikermick@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

You are correct but IIRC you have to opt out as their commission is included by default. Found this out after donating, it was easy to go back and undo it

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Ah ok. Maybe at one point it was easy to overlook, but it wasn't for me when I made my recent donation. Good they let you change it.

[-] Hikermick@lemmy.world 21 points 4 months ago

Anybody else notice a lot of houses for sale recently? Some near me are on the market for a long time.

[-] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

I used to drive by these two houses in a rural neighborhood which had huge “trump” signs in their front lawns for years.
Both houses recently replaced those signs with “for sale” signs.

I had to laugh.

Most of the southeast in the US is in an early housing market collapse. New homes cost less than used inventory, which is a horrible sign. Inventory and time on market are also creeping up.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Supposedly the real estate market is the worst it's been since 1995. I guess if you are on the buying side, it might be ok. Not sure if recent/upcoming rate cuts will start showing up in mortgage rates...

Gosh I wonder what we could do about income inequality to fix this.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

Thank goodness - it's so much better than it was under the (memory-hole version of) Biden's economy! Doesn't everyone else remember that total hellscape?

[-] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 months ago

Would have been fun if he would have said that while at the World Economic Forum.

[-] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 4 points 4 months ago

Mostly the economy is under terrible management since January 20th. It was doing really well before then, now it’s only doing really well for the select few that are part of the oligarchy class thats on good terms with the mobster in charge.

[-] BakerBagel@midwest.social 4 points 4 months ago

Wy do you feel the economy was doing well when pretty much every metric shows that everyone not making six figures has seen their quality of life drop for the last 4 year?
