Also weird that the article title says 'for trans' instead of 'for being transgender'

Regardless, when Adams went back to the grocery and called for police from there, it took officers four hours to show up, she said.

Maybe they’re too busy trying to find Osama in their intelligence unit

There's also the extremely fucked up racist dimension to this where people tend to assume cis black women are trans what-the-hell

The cops' handling of this whole thing is just chefs-kiss

[-] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 40 points 2 years ago

Brown said cops dropped the ball by failing to release the video to the media, as they often do when it is trying to identify and locate a suspect, and by conducting just one cursory phone interview with the victim.

They probably hired him onto the force.

The anti-trans hysteria is terrifying.

I've noticed people that are anti-trans are obsessed about it, it's like they think about it constantly, no wonder these fascist pigs act out like this with increasing frequency.

Staten Island

Why is it always Staten Island? Does the lack of subway access make them fash?

[-] PM_ME_YOUR_FOUCAULTS@hexbear.net 32 points 2 years ago

They actually do have a metro rail line, but, overall unironically yes. Large parts of it are just a white NYC suburb that can only be reasonably accessed by car, so it's reactionary for the same reasons somewhere like Long Island is reactionary

[-] wtypstanaccount04@hexbear.net 7 points 2 years ago

Staten Island Railway uses subway rolling stock, but the frequency (every 30 minutes or so) isn't very good and it's isolated from the rest of the network. In this way it's not really a subway line.

Just a misunderstanding

also delis sell weed in new york? what the hell?

[-] PM_ME_YOUR_FOUCAULTS@hexbear.net 35 points 2 years ago

They legalized weed and then didn't issue any legal licenses to sell it, so a massive grey market sprang up basically overnight

Also quite a few of the sketchier sort of bodega sold weed even when it was illegal

I remember being with a friend when I was in Brooklyn, and getting an eighth with our sandwiches and drinks.

(article quote spoilered for transphobia)

"He said I was trying to get him fired and that he was going to call the cops," she recounted. "I said, ‘Call the cops! I just want my money back.’ Then I heard him call me a transvestite. I’m like, ‘Transvestite? I’m a whole female. I have lady parts.'"

i dunno what to think of the victims of transphobic violence not only not being trans, but also being actively transphobic themselves - it's an extremely weird situation out there

[-] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 22 points 2 years ago

Yeah the use of "transvestite" was very telling here.

[-] Sephitard9001@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago

"I don't like that you're kicking my head in because you think I'm trans but I'll defend to death your right to do it!"

i don't know anything about this source but it's kind of bitterly amusing that this article has a bunch of pictures of her from different angles, like they know full well that many hogs in their audience are going to want to analyze her appearance and decide for themselves if she "looks trans"

[-] GnastyGnuts@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

Another case-study in why cis-gender people should have solidarity with trans-people, if only out of self-preservation. The transphobes are fucking crazy.

They really felt the need to front the fact that she was buying weed and was bi as if those were the most important pieces of information. It smacks of "so long as you aren't queer or buying the devil's lettuce this won't happen to you"

How about "Woman shopping at NYC deli wearing pride watch" just off the top of my head.

Stay away from jazz and liquor!

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
