I don't know the terms, but many Chinese keyboards like Sogou have this feature built in. So, yeah, people use things like :D but they also use emotes which are platform specific and also the more fancy ones built into keyboards.

{顔文字|kaomoji}, the word, uses adapted Chinese characters (literally: face characters/letters), so I wouldn't be surprised if their word for it uses their equivalent.
