There has been a tremendous effort to sanitize Hitler's image, and that of the Nazi's in general, into something less problematic for the images of a great many groups/organizations they were associated with (look up the 'clean wehrmacht' myth if you want to see how this works). Since showing Hitler was a staunch supporter of your opponent's viewpoint would be an instant victory in basically any discussion, and revulsion of atheists is one of those rare things religions can generally all agree about, the two get lumped together not infrequently.
