Hi All,

As the Fediverse continues to expand, we're looking at other platforms we can run with our ethos - open federation, user choice, and fair moderation.

We've seen lots of talk about Piefed, and the benefits of the platform, such as better moderation, combining multiple communities into topics i.e piefed.zip/topic/cats, and the ability for users to better control their own experience.

To that end, we've decided to run our own Piefed instance, located at piefed.zip (I know, original!)

This is very much still under construction, but we feel is now able to accept new users, should anyone wish to join.

If you're interested please check it out, or feel free to ask any questions!

PS - this doesn't affect our Lemmy instance in any way.

What is piefed and how is it different (or the same as) from lemmy?

[-] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

I'd say its similar to lemmy, but with features people have asked for like a way to combine the feeds of similar communities and more moderation options.

The easiest way I can explain it though is to encourage people to just check it out. It's not as mature in some places, but has lots of features you didn't realise you were missing until you tried them :)

It used activitypub, the same as lemmy, so you can find and interact with all the communities you do on lemmy too.

Is there any app to use for it?

At the moment interstellar is the only one I'm aware of but many are adding it as an option

So, as many here, I joined Lemmy two years ago following the reddit change regarding their API policy. I always have been rather open-source enthusiast (even though that I became less extreme with years and professional computer science experience, as a student I was a bit more utopist), so Lemmy seemed to me the perfect replacement.

I was not disappointed and, as an end-user, I still enjoy Lemmy better than I had ever liked reddit. However, during the two years that I have been using Lemmy and the grow of the user base, l experienced two instances shutdown, my first one shutdown overnight without any warning and, just now, lemm.ee is shutting down because moderation become unmanageable for instance admins.

So this bring me to my point, since reaction to posts about lemm.ee shutdown, I hear a lot speaking about piefed. Is piefed somehow better than lemmy? Is it right that lemmy communities are accessible through piefed? What are arguments for switching to piefed or to remain on lemmy?

Do you know any good threads, blog post, whatever discussing this, that can help me figure out?

Hey, so better is more of an objective term - piefed offers a more comprehensive moderation experience for admins and mods, and addresses some of the issues that users raise around multiple communities and account settings etc.

Piefed runs on activitypub just like lemmy does, so are compatible with eachother - you probably already see piefed users and communities in your lemmy feed.

I wouldn't say there is an argument either way from a user perspective- I'd encourage people to try both and see what they like.

There are no front ends yet that work with piefed (like tesseract or photon) but they're being worked on. There's also only a few apps, but similarly these are being worked on too, so before long you can probably interact with either software through an app.

Lemmy was the first and so is the most popular, and I hope the devs are able to bring some of the moderation features over to lemmy too, as it is quite a limited experience in comparison to many fediverse softwares.

Hope that helps, but tldr try both and see which one you like, they can interact with eachother anyway, I.e. https://piefed.zip/c/home can be interacted with via https://lemmy.zip/c/[email protected]

I'm curious what performance and resource usage is like. Building a social media service in Python seems unusual.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago

I find that sentiment weird. Python is a popular language for social networks. Instagram, threads, and some parts of the clusterfuck that is facebook are written in python.

We will be doing our usual server updates for piefed as well so will share this info!

[-] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

Since this is tagged on lemmy.zip I’d like to point out that it might not be the best idea for existing lemmy.zip users to also use piefed.zip since if the admin(s) are no longer able to continue both of your presences would go down. In the true spirit of the fediverse it makes sense to spread your logins around.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

On the other hand, dot zip admins are known to be chill and not likely to cause a defederation.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Oh, yeah, this is not a knock against the admins at all. The .zip team might have an amazing set of contingency plans, etc - I have no idea - which would make this more or less a moot point. I’m just not a fan of single points of failure.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

At the very least, backups have been fire-tested. We were back up and running within a day when one of the recent upgrades went all to shit.

I have a non-zip alt that sits idle and hopefully will stay idle :)

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

oh snap. i only just made my lemmy.zip login recently but i might hop onto the piefed instance instead because of the feature set!

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

I think the only thing that has kept me on lemmy instead of piefed is the voyager app. I tried piefed web interface on mobile but I just missed voyager too much.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago

Congrats on the new service.

I'm a UK user and unlike lemmy.zip, piefed.zip appears to be accessible to me.

I assume this is simply because you haven't got around to geoblocking it yet?

[-] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

slight edit to this reply from when it was posted

Currently under review - there are other tools built in to Piefed we might be able to use other than a full geoblock. We could comply with the OSA by preventing UK IP addresses from creating accounts. Unfortunately we'd need a country level NSFW toggle to allow UK users to join.

Still early days, so I can't rule it out though.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

I created my account like one hour ago and never received the validation mail. Is it normal (like a queue running during the night or so)?

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

Just double check your spam folder :)

If its not there drop me a message!

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Thank you for doing this!

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

damn that's a sexy and responsive interface.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Is access through the Interstellar app something you have to allow on your end? I got an error about an Alpha API. Sorry if this is a super stupid question, I genuinely have no clue how it all works on the instance admin side!

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Hey, yeah it is. We will enable the API soon - we just wanted to get everything up before we enabled it :) we'll need it for our bot stuff anyway.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

That's totally understandable! Please don't take that question as trying to rush you guys, monkey brain just like putting fitting rocks together and got curious when it didn't work. :3

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

API works now, should be good for interstellar :)

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

Cool! Checking it out now.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

nice. app submitted

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

i joined [email protected] with my piefed.zip account, but it's not showing any posts. the community works fine from lemmy.zip-- am i doing something wrong, or is this part of getting the piefed.zip instance set up and working?

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

Hey, much like lemmy, it won't pull posts from before the first user subscribed (in this case you!) However, piefed has a feature where you can import posts in to the community if they're not already there. I'll pull a few of them now, so keep an eye on it :)

Probably not for me, but can't deny the popularity. Questions:

How distinct is this instance from piefed.zip? Running alongside on same hardware, different hardware at the same host or completely separate?

How will this affect the donation model? What separation or merging of funds do you have in mind? I'm happy either way, but it should be made clear sooner rather than later.

This instance is run by the same team as Lemmy.zip

this doesn't affect our Lemmy instance in any way.

These two statements are at odds. If the same staff labour is now divided among two instances, then there is an effect. I worry about running into the lemm.ee problem of too few staff to deal with the load of an expanding 'zippyverse'. I know we've added more staff (love you ♥️), but would not want to burn them out. More on the team soon or are you all currently ok with workload?

Best of luck!

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Hey, all good questions.

Different hardware, piefed.zip is running on a cloud vps. Still with hetzner so the admin team can access & troubleshoot.

Donations wise, if piefed takes off we'll probably go down a joint .zip dono route, rather than distinctly donating to each individual server. If nothing else, its easier to manage one dono page/setup than multiple. In the meantime I'll fund at least month 1 until I'm happy either way. Lemmy.zip is still my baby and won't be going anywhere. But yes I'll do some comms around that when I'm happy with a solution.

Piefed offers more in terms of moderation and enables a wider "staff" team, which is a level that lemmy is missing, I.e. an instance moderator. We've already started to leverage that, so that the moderation isn't just on the admin team, rather trusted community members can help out. Happy for anyone to reach out if they're planning on switching to piefed and want to help out.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

All sounds good. Piefed might not be my style, but pitching into .zip as a collective - whatever form it takes - certainly is.

Though I'm sure you will, please police your community sourced mods effectively.

Onwards and upwards, looking forward to seeing how it all develops :)

PS - this doesn’t affect our Lemmy instance in any way.

Then why is it a pinned post at the top of my feed?

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

this is a non issue

It's an announcements that the new instance exists

I am more scared of people (ab-)using Python for production ready software outside the Data Science world.

I am even more scared of them, if they use the following arguments to justify their decision: “(…) enabling contributions from programmers of all skill levels and keeping server costs down”

But you know. It is open source. There is nothing that stops them from doing this. That’s fine. I’m just out.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Wait until you learn how many Linux systems relies on python.

As for "enabling contributions from programmers of all skill levels and keeping server costs down"

Thats no issue so as long expert maintainers are code reviewing any pull request and not letting garbage commits in.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

Not to be a shill... but lots of commercial systems have run on python: https://inoxoft.com/blog/top-23-applications-made-with-python/

Not just for data science, but in core services, including Dropbox, Instacart, Instagram, and Reddit. It's pretty good at getting something up and running, and there are lots of published tricks for optimizing it so it scales.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

It's a weird hill to die on, but you're absolutely entitled to do it.
