I propose to create this community and appointment myself as the mod.

Not sure if this is the correct sub to make these requests so let me know if it's not appropriate and redirect me elsewhere.

I've only dove a few times and am interested in doing it regularly. Though, this is probably a really expensive hobby.

There's a metal bezel mod that I have on my casio watch that I got from china for $10, I would rather spend more money if it was made in a place with fair practices but it doesn't exist anywhere except aliexpress. There are a bunch of other items stuff like screen protectors and electronics that aren't made in the US for consumers to buy and that's a damn shame.

My point is, the tariffs are supposed to get us to manufacture more stuff in house and be more independent but I don't think it will work. If you look at China's playbook, they didn't impose massive tariffs on the world but still managed to be a global manufacturing warehouse out if nothing. China pretty much just subsidizes a bunch of their companies and gives them major tax breaks, along with giving them money if they sell internationally.

If the orange rapist wants to do this, then why doesn't he just copy the same thing, give incentives to manufacture goods instead of punishing consumers? The reason people aren't buying in house, is because we don't make anything in house.

So I have a young teen entering 7th grade and so they're about to receive their first phone. With that, it opens a lot of doors to all the big tech social media apps and privacy invasive services.

I'm not sure how to approach this. My parents probably want tracking features so it'll probably be Find My or a 3rd party app like life360 depending on if we choose iphone or degoogled pixel.

Social media I'm not sure if fediverse stuff is the right path especially for lemmy, since it's just tech nerd stuff and politics which isn't interesting really unless they go out of their way to find smaller communities. Their friends will probably force them onto Instagram or some shit and I don't really want them doomscolling on reels, that shit algorithm, and the malicious messaging app built in to it.

It's just kinda hard trying to blend being a functional member of society and maintain your mental well being and privacy.

You guys know of any way I can get certified (Advanced and rescue) for a cheaper price or even paid for? I know that my uni has a bit of a discounted rate but was wondering if there are any other options.

Maybe I can do a little marine surveying volunteering for a free cert idk.

Is there a more free version of Alltrails? I find Alltrails to be too paywalled when I don't even think they deserve my money. What exactly do they even do? The community creates everything and it's not like they're contributing to the Maps community or anything.

Any good apps for sleeping, walking, running, etc? Maybe they'll have more in the future but was wondering for the time being.

So my mom promised my little sibling a phone in a few months.

As of now, they have no social media or anything, just a Steam account and Spotify I made with an email alias.

I have the feeling their friends will rope them in to mainstream social media and I have no idea how to combat this or even if I should. Fediverse social media is not even there yet and as for messaging, idk if these guys will find it batshit crazy to use Signal or not.

My main fear is just social media addiction, depression, and the big tech guys stealing personal information.

I'm thinking maybe we get an iphone because my mom still wants the tracking feature for peace of mind and some different phone number for social media.

Graphene phone might be a little hardcore so not gonna go that route, iphone with lockdown mode and no icloud should be fine.

For things like email, thinking protonmail for email because I'm used to it but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions? Do y'all think I'm crazy?

You know, Kristen, when Abraham Lincoln was in Gettysburg, looking out on the field with so many had died to defend freedom, he talked about a vision of America where we have a government of the people, by the people and for the people. What we have right now in Washington, let me be very clear, is a government of the billionaire class, by the billionaire class and for the billionaire class.

What a banger of a quote

I hate that republicans like saying that republicans are better for the economy when they're not

And on Tuesday, 37 Members of Parliament signed an open letter to the Council of Europe urging legislators to reject Chat Control.

"We explicitly warn that the obligation to systematically scan encrypted communication, whether called 'upload-moderation' or 'client-side scanning,' would not only break secure end-to-end encryption, but will to a high probability also not withstand the case law of the European Court of Justice," the MEPs said. "Rather, such an attack would be in complete contrast to the European commitment to secure communication and digital privacy, as well as human rights in the digital space."

I hope to fuck this shit won't get passed

Although the general education classes like psychology and sociology are annoying, they're all essential knowledge for being an educated human being. It's a shame Florida wants their population to be ignorant conservatives.

I hear this all the time. I have this conversation on the regular.

Them: "Oh you think Tik Tok is spyware?"

Me: "yes"

Them: "I'll have you know so is Google, Apple, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Microsoft, and all the big American companies too"

Me: "Yeah, that's why I don't use them"

Them: gasp "you're just paranoid bro are you a drug dealer or something?"

Me: "no, I just like my privacy. You probably wouldn't like it if some guy was following you keeping tabs about everything you do either."

Them: "well I've got nothing to hide"

Me: "maybe the next person in power might see your current and past beliefs illegal"

Imo Reddit has been the winner of the 3rd party apps and fuck spez protests. The users came crawling back. A few of us went to lemmy and formed quality communities, but for the most part, a large majority are on there.

From u/fablegrimoire,

"Gamedev here. This is NOT normal. I suspect a bug happened on Valve's side.

EDIT: checked our Steam email again: "If you do not add a USD price to these columns for your game before November 20th, we will default to the standard USD pricing you already have in Steamworks.", seems like manual input was explicitly needed after all, but I'm not the only dev who missed it apparently.

Here's a summary of what happened:

Last month, Steam notified all devs and publishers of the price change
Steam automatically suggested prices for LATAM and MENA (mostly half the USA price)
Through the Steam pricing tool, devs can manually override the suggestion with another price
We manually lowered the price to our 2nd game, but let Steam decide for our 1st game ($12.49)
Come today, and through Steamdb, we see that Steam did NOT apply its own suggested price for our 1st game. Instead it applied USA price (24.99). We still see the halved, Steam-suggested $12.49 price in our pricing tool.

Game developers are now discovering this and are hurriedly manually changing the prices to make it fairer to LATAM and MENA regions. We just did that and are waiting for Valve to approve the change.

I promise that outside of AAA publishers like EA, almost no game developer wanted this to happen. We're aware that this is counter-intuitive and we know it won't help with sales (or our reputation) at all."

On android when you go to the wifi settings you're currently connected to there should be a setting for randomizing mac address per connection or per network. If you change it to per connection, once you disconnect and reconnect your mac address should change. On per network, it will randomly generate the mac address for the first connection and keep that address for that wifi forever.

Damn they tried to plug LTT store too. GN made a long serious video with stats, data, no jokes, no sponsors or plugs.
