These stories about EU supporting Russia because we still buy gas and oil from them are total bullshit.
The entire energy sektor in Russia is now running at a deficit, all because of EU boycott.
Even gazprom that used to be the most profitable company in Russia, is now running with losses!
EU is even planning to vain itself even further from dependency on Russian gaz, and is even planning to support this effort for some of the countries this will hit.
On top of that EU is planning to reduce the maximum price allowed to pay for Russian oil to only $40. Which will decrease the price they get from other countries too, because Russia is desperately needing the currency, and they can't afford to say no to a bad deal.
Also the graph that shows aid to Ukraine is decidedly wrong, And claims Ukraine only received $73bn when in fact it's €158bn.

Even though some of it are loans "in the form of highly concessional loans", those loans are generally planned to be paid from other sources than Ukraine if possible.
I must admit I didn't read any further, because the article seems more misleading than informing.
The $73bn number looks suspiciously close to the amount EU countries have given independently without including the amount the EU has given as the EU (just shy of $50bn). It also won't include the UK, Norway, or Switzerland, the first of which in particular is a large donor due to being a large economy
No not really, according to EU ONLY counting EU countries, 35% of the €158 are loans, leaving €118 bn in direct aid without the loans.
IDK why, but for some reason it seems like a propaganda attack piece to make EU look bad, when in fact EU has done more than anybody else to help Ukraine.
Can we do more? Yes we can, and EU has been working on that too. Already before USA betrayed us, but further extremely escalated after, especially on the long term planning, that requires huge investments now, but won't show results until years into the future.
Yes these companies are losing money, but they have to pay money to the state also when they are not making money. I agree the angle of buying stuff from Russia equals supporting them is bs, but the Russian state does receive money from eu (for which eu gets gas and oil in return) that they can spend on waging war on Ukraine.
That is true, but you can't just cut off a major part of your infrastructure without causing dammage.
So it's idiotic to claim that EU should just have cut off everything from Russia day one.
It's being cut off as fast as we can. But unfortunately a few countries like Hungary and Slovakia aren't interested in doing it. And for instance Italy hasn't done much either.
But despite that there is wide agreement in EU that we must do this, and the countries that don't will face consequences.

It's really hard for me to imagine us moving away from it but it's very clear it's toxic in every way it touches our lives.
From our dependence on Russian oil, to the climate impact of hydrocarbons, to the exhaust fumes being linked to childhood asthma, to tire particulates being a huge source of microplastics, to the enormous tax subsidies required to even make them viable, to the ways it has shaped our society to be more isolated.
I truly fucking hate cars.
This is why Europe needs to end its dependency on Russian energy and avoid new dependencies on Chinese (or other country's) renewable technology.
So American LNG imports? Doesn't sound too attractive an option nowadays, although a great bargaining chip in the tariff deals.
Well ideally let's get off of fossil fuels altogether as much as is practical
Nuclear or batteries come with their own kind of logistical problems.
Edit: It might sound that I'm being a contrarian, but I'm with you. Europe has dug itself in a deep hole, and I'm not sure how it will manage its way out without depending on dictatorships.
But haven't you heard, nuclear power is evil. Also, why should we, the developed nations, let international companies tear up the place to obtain the natural resources? It's way cheaper to force some developing nations and their citizens to toil under horrible work conditions and bad pay. Bonus points: the view in our backyards stays beautiful and we can forget about the slave-like work others are forced to do. Out of sight, out of mind!
