Data used mass surveillance when he saw your mom

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Also without using AI. Oh wait...

[-] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago

But to be fair mr Data did misuse AI irresponsiblly also (to create Moriarty)

Geordi is probably also guilty of mass surveillance. He admitted to peeking at the cards in poker for curiosity so how can we know that he wasn't tempted to look through a duratanium door or wall every now and then?

[-] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago

That was simply because he was a pervert! He would never spy on behalf of the state.

Are we talking about how he used AI to recreate his special lady friend the engineer who designed the ship, and then he eventually meets her for real and she’s like “yeah you’re super creepy dude.” Or are we talking about some other weird shit Geordi does?

Then the audience goes on to write a lot of fanfic...

Reginald ~~Broccoli~~ Barclay approves this position

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

To be fair, didn't Barclay turn himself into a panopticon by enmeshing his brain with the ship's computer that one time? Is it a loophole in "mass surveillance" if you just happen to have eyes all over a starship?

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

His excuse (in retrospect) was "Alien technology did this to me, so how can I refuse?!" 😄 Plus, the mass surveillance existed on the ship before him and all crew members seem to be fine with that when signing on. Given who he was before and during the event in question probably caused a few people, like Deanna, to ask Geordi to do in her quarters what he did in the conference room for privacy.

He also solved the crime by knowing the plot in advance

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

He didn't need to, the Enterprise had all the internal and external sensors to do it for him.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

You can just ask the ships computer where anyone is at any time. Seems like a big privacy violation from the get go.

Part of the difference is that most Starfleet officers have the discipline to not do such things. A point that was brought up in TNG s1e26 "The Neutral Zone":

PICARD: I'm Captain Picard.

RALPH: Excellent. Now, maybe we'll be able to get some things straightened out.

PICARD: We may indeed. Those comm. panels are for official ship business.

RALPH: If they are so important, why don't they need an executive key?

PICARD: Aboard a starship, that is not necessary. We are all capable of exercising self-discipline. Now, you will refrain from using them.

There are still plenty of foreign visitors on the Enterprise, not to mention all the literal children living there. I always found the reasoning provided by Picard there rather silly.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

The rod was still firmly crammed up his chiseled ass at that time. After the Borg and Data's 1st death, he became a touch more grounded and cynical.

Well it's a utopia, not a dystopia. Or so it has been shown to us.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Can you? The only people who we've seen use that feature are people who would be the authority to do so anyway, like the Captain/First officer.

Does he? He could literally be interfacing with the holodeck off-camera and know everything about the program.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

He could... but he won't, bc ethics (and a desire to be more human) 😁

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I like Worf's turn as Sherlock. He just keeps meklething suspects until someone yields.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

mass spectrometry is a form of mass surveillance

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Looking at a mirror that is behind me is m'ass surveilance.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

Stop it. You are confusing the cops. You are telling them to not use mass surveillance but to refer to Data

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

jokes on you, though. he has material substance, and he has eyes. mass surveillance, you rubes!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

I mean… how do you know what sort of api calls he’s making and databases he’s querying on the backend?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

I don't know if he actually has wireless access.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Well, after all, he is (wiggles eyebrows) fully functional. He probably just needs to erect his antenna.
