I'm from the US and can't travel atm.

Extra points if it helps me learn about Chinese culture.

BTW, is anyone else barely able to memorize anything from Duolingo?

If you can get your basics down, Hellotalk is a great way to chat with Chinese people who are learning English. There's often kind of an expectation that you'll be helping each other, but the translation tools are good and I've had some great conversations.

Also yeah Duolingo fucking sucks. Try HelloChinese if you want an app. Much better.

Just did one lesson of Hello Chinese and you're right, it is better. I should probably get a screen pen for the app's Chinese characters to learn writing.

Seconding hellotalk. I made friends there then if I found someone who was cool to talk to, I added them on WeChat and just chatted there

Same. I kind of hate the UI of HelloTalk so I ended up switching to WeChat when I had found people I liked chatting to; but other than my gripes with the UI (and of course privacy-related issues) I quite like the app. Also fun fact the app admins once told me to change my pfp because it had a flag in it lol.

Duolingo suddenly changed the format of its lessons for me a couple of days ago and now it makes no sense.

It was kind of shitty before that happened, too. But at least I was using it consistently.

I'll look into HelloChinese.
