March 31, Bill Maher had dinner at the Whitehouse with Donald Trump, Kid Rock, and Dana White.

April 11, Bill Maher made an episode of his show glazing Trump. It was loaded with civility shit. He talked about how civil Trump is in person and how they agree on a lot of stuff.

Bill Maher is a right wing Zionist who identifies as a Democrat on his talk show.

April 21, Larry David (creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm) publishes a satirical story in NYT titled "My Dinner with Adolf". It does not name Bill Maher directly but people have interpreted it to be mocking Bill Maher. https://archive.is/tNjw7

I think Larry David is a Bernie-crat. He's met Bernie Sanders. Some articles say he has never been to Israel but some of the episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm seem pro-Israel. He might be a Liberal Zionist.

Yesterday, Bill Maher accuses Larry David of disrespecting the victims of the Holocaust by comparing Trump to Hitler.

Most people do. It’s taught in schools that it was only Jewish people and you have to take advanced classes or be lucky enough to have a teacher who cares to learn the truth.

The quality probably varies by state and by district. Only learned about gays and the disabled in AP history. Some edgelord kid argued in class that it was the right thing to do for the disabled. This was in the 2000’s though and there’s a chance it’s improved since then.

Comparing modern day fascism to historic examples of fascism, is always valid. Choosing to "leave it in it's own place", is a form of denial. You are ignoring the obvious signs of fascism that are right in front of you, because you refuse to compare them to past examples. Hitler was a fascist. Every single one of Trump's policies that are comparable to Hitler's, need to be recognized for what they are. This is what fascism looks like. Closing your eyes to that fact, is dangerous.

It’s iffy with me. It overshadows the homegrown history of this stuff from a country that inspired the Nazis. Jackson, McKinley, Wilson, Buchanan, Hoover. The list goes on. They’ve done a lot of the same things and have stronger parallels to Trump and yet they’re overlooked all the time in favor of being compared to fascists from across the pond.

Like I’ll see foreigners make the Hitler comparison with Bukele when Central America has no shortage of fascist assholes to compare him to.

Marty converted to Judaism and wouldn't take off his kippah but the tone is both wrong place for it and also ragging on him for converting a week or so ago and going so hard. His mother's family is Jewish, but he didn't know that until he was already grown up. He was raised as a Catholic and made a career out of being an annoying atheist. So he's technically half Jewish but he only uses that for political purposes.

I read a great little indigenous anarchist zine that made a similar point: if you just found out you're 1/32 Anishinaabe and this came as a big shock or revelation, it's very inappropriate to suddenly claim it as an identity. You have no cultural connection and have never been embedded in the community. You probably don't even know anyone who does!

But what about the many African Americans who don't grow up knowing their African roots because of slavery. Is it wrong if they take a DNA test and figure out they're part Nigerian and embrace that culture as an adult? I'm not debate bro-ing you, it's just a food for thought.

I'd defer to the Nigerian community on that, though of course the opinion would not be homogeneous. If the answer is different from what I gave above, I probably couldn't give you an abstract sociological justification for that difference without some lengthy conversations with people from both communities to better understand their relationship to their identity.

I personally would find it a bit strange if a white person found out they had Nigerian DNA and completely switched their entire wardrobe to traditional dress without knowing a single other Nigerian, but maybe that's just me.
