I mean, it's obviously the flanged mace. It's the only one that purely serves its purpose as a weapon and not simply a meat tenderizer or hammer.

Maces were great for abusing the peasants and hammering on knights.

War hammers were god damned crimes. Because the focused blunt end of the hammer can REALLY cause some serious damage. But also? The back is a pick. So you don't even need to dent the armor and cause bruising. You just pierce a brain on the backhand.

Which is why the lucerne hammer (bec de corbin above) was the best anti-armor weapon out there. A polearm that can fuck you up three different ways.

I'm not someone who's actually studied medieval combat, but as I understand it while a war hammer was a better weapon than a mace it was also more complicated to use. You've actually got to aim and align your strikes, while a mace is just "swing the pointy bits at the guy you want dead."

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

If you want any degree of force in your swing you are already "aiming and aligning" anything. Its the difference between wailing and actually throwing a punch. A schoolkid throwing a swing might bloody a nose but is probably going to hurt them as much as their target. Someone who knows how to properly make a fist and put their body into it? You don't need much strength to fuck someone up.

So, theoretically, you could still do a decent amount of damage on an unarmored civilian using something like a morningstar. But that is almost entirely the spikes.

If you wanted any hope of causing meaningful damage to an armored opponent or even an unarmored combatant with their adrenaline pumping? You needed to know how to swing your weapon whether it was a mace, a hammer, or a sword. And as long as you hold the weapon correctly, you get hitting them with the fun bit "for free".

I never tried tenderizing meat with a flail before, but it really works! 10/10. I recommend it

Idk, I kinda like the candle stick/coat rack

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Roundhouse kick for the win

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 weeks ago

Quarterstaff. Long things hit hard.

flanged mace 100% but I am also not disinterested in bec de corbin

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Re: Bac de Corbin, what's the minimum percentage of bluntness to count as a blunt weapon?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago

at least the hammer side qualifies

The Bec de Corbin is nice for when you aren't sure if you're feeling buldgeony or stabby. It's like the chicken and waffles of the blunt weapon world.

Good day to you too

It hardly matters, just as long as it's rusty and pointy...

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago

How you gonna do the Shillelagh this dirty?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Quarterstaff, personally. It can double as a walking stick.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I love flails.

But I would also take a Bec De Corbin Dallas, Multipass.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

morningstar, with flail as a close second :3

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago

I'm very confident that I would injure myself with a flail.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Mine's whatever Hawkgirl uses.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 2 weeks ago

Double-sided tape?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Morningstar with magic disruption

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I think war hammer gives you the most versatility as a weapon, and flanged mace is my favorite for style, but my heart belongs to the quarterstaff, as it long has. Defense and offense and its a big stick!

Ravens Beak ofc (bec de corbin)

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago

Morningstar. Based entirely off of the (incorrectly) named macemen in Lords Of The Realm 2.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

They may stop asking you, but nobody here got old enough to stop raving about their favorite when prompted.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Cudgel [BONK]

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Mace and/or quarterstaff are my preference. Simple, not a lot to go wrong or get caught on things. Light enough to get multiple hits in quick succession.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Simple mace is the easy answer. It's lighter than the quarterstaff, and the skill transfer from baseball and pillow fights is fairly direct.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Definitely the simple mace over the flanged. Its more or less just a baton with a weight at the end.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

I've always been a flail kinda person

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Dude, you need a better mic. Thought you said to bring the flared base and I was expecting a completely different kind of party.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Halberds combine the benefits of an axe and a spear. Best of both world

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Not blunt though.

It is the best otherwise!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Any weapon can be a blunt weapon if you're holding it wrong

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

If you want blunt-ish, try the Lucerne hammer. The pronged hammer could penetrate plate armour without getting stuck, and its length made it better for spearing than the bec de corbin.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

mace, straight up, no worrying about getting it stuck in someone's face like a morningstar

At least half of those are not blunt

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Ok, but I did have this exact conversation with my kids last week. Mace and morningstar were the winners; I'm partial to a war hammer, myself.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I like the quarterstaff, but you know what would make it even better? If you took a sharp piece of metal and put it on one end so you can stab a dude after bonking him. I don't know what you'd call it though. A staffstab?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

That stabstaff should be really handy for spearing people.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Well the flanged mace is objectively the best one if we're going to ignore the Lucerne.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Flanged mace any day of the week

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

No goedendag? Pffff!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

All I see are props for black metal album covers.
