On this day in 1573, the Croatian-Slovene Peasant Revolt began with an attack on the fortress of Cesargrad, near the town of Klanjec. Peasants formed their own government, planning to abolish feudalism and establish self-rule.

Amidst growing incursions by Ottoman forces into the region, local feudal lords ramped up economic demands on the local peasantry. One powerful noble, Franjo (or Ferenc) Tahy was particularly notorious for his cruel and violent treatment of the local populace.

Complaints made by peasants to the central government were ignored, so popular resistance efforts began to develop. The local peasantry refused to pay taxes to Tahy, who responded by sending armed mercenaries to attack them, however they were defeated by armed peasants.

On the night of January 27-28, rebels seized the fortress of Cesargrad, marking the start of the revolt. The peasants formed an alternative government, with serf Matija Gubec elected as leader.

The rebels made long term plans of systemic reform, including replacing feudal lords with peasant officials, abolishing feudal land holdings and provincial borders, canceling obligations to the Roman Catholic Church, opening of highways for trade, and establishing self-rule by the peasants.

News of the uprising quickly spread through the discontented lower classes of the region, who followed suit by fighting back against their oppressors, taking further territory throughout Carniola, Croatia and Styria.

The Croatian Parliament declared the revolutionary peasants traitors. After their initial wave of success, peasant forces suffered a major defeat at Krško on February 5th, which precipitated a further wave of defeats over the coming days.

The rebels made their final stand at Stubičke Toplice on the 9th, where the uprising was crushed for good. Matija Gubec was captured, and Ivan Mogaić, another important revolutionary leader, was killed on the battlefield.

Captives were maimed and tortured by authorities, and Gubec was publicly tortured and executed on the 15th. Although the revolt was unsuccessful, its memory has persisted in the region in the centuries since, with Gubec attaining legendary status in local folklore.

A detachment of Yugoslav volunteers for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War named themselves the "Grupo Matija Gubec". In 1975, a film based on the events entitled "Anno Domini 1573" was released, and historical re-enactments of the Revolt are held in Croatia every year.

My coworker keeps saying stuff under his breath around me that on the surface aren't particularly hurtful, but the way he's saying them just feels like he's trying to insult me in a plausibly deniable way. Maybe I'm just being oversensitive.

Maybe I'm just being oversensitive.

I don't think so, under the breath is the pretty universal shit-talking frequency

Just broke this glass thing that had a lot of sentimental value to me and is irreplaceable and genuinely can't feel any emotions to feel bad about it :/

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The sentimental value was in your heart the whole time and those memories are still in there

I'm cookin' with gas with morning.

  • I put the kettle on yet somehow it never whistled. I have gas burners. I only turned on only ventilation fan but I forgot to turn on the burner.

  • I made a title of a post https://archive.ph/ls4VB and it was like that for 15 minutes before I finally caught the error.

  • I made a bad post in c/doomer that I had to delete. I should have known better.

  • I made a yet another bad post had to delete. I put this one in c/technology. I should have known better too.

Hopefully this will be my worst posting day of 2025 and I won't somehow manage to burn my house down. Thank you for coming to my "Not a good day" TED Talk.

[Ninja edit. I managed to finally make coffee without incident. I will not update this post if I spill hot coffee all over myself. There's been enough self-confessional for today.]

glasses-on

After reading about China’s culture and current political system, I can’t not see how everything American is diametrically opposed to that worldview. I’ve noticed it a lot in entertainment lately, especially the way singular people are credited (excessively) for group achievements. Shit kinda blows ngl, it’s like another class consciousness awakening

Does anyone else find their therapy to end up being a new source of stress? I only started it a few months ago but honestly the logistics of it, staying on top of making appointments, having to reschedule all the time for whatever dumb reason (last time was I forgot to go to the doctor to get a new referral) and most all the financial stress of trying to afford a session…. It almost feels like more trouble than it’s worth.

Average American: "According to the PRC, nothing happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989."

"Well, what DID happen in Tiananmen Square in 1989?"

Average American: "Umm... well, there were protests, I think? The government killed people? There were tanks...?"

visible-disgust

This kinda triggered me, 17K people believe that an amount they can’t even pretend to comprehend can be earned by one person. The cancer of individualism knows no bounds apparently

Just got my DMV registration renewal in the mail and this year I have to get a smog check. I have two months to figure out what to do about it.

My car's had an engine light on for over a year now. I haven't gotten a second opinion but when I got it checked they said I needed a new head gasket. A 100 dollar part that needs 3k of labor AND the procedure could total the engine because screwing it back together could strip the aluminum screw threads.

So I dunno what to do honestly. Having seen this coming this whole time I've been trying to scrape together as much money as I could... didn't end up being a whole lot... and I was kinda cheating by not having taxes withheld from my paychecks... so I dunno guys... things might just not work out...

Feeling like I'm reaching a new level of misanthropy; I am coming away from more and more interactions feeling misunderstood, frustrated, and unfulfilled.

I think deep seek is cool unlike other ai programs because its logo is a whale and I like whales. Seriously why would companies stop using animals for their logos? Try hating viewsonic, that's right, you can't because it's logo is 3 cute little birds

From another post in here:

the US dropped biological weapons containing insects on China and Korea during the Korean War (with knowledge obtained from Japanese unit 731 war criminals)

Does anyone have something I can read about this? It's fuckin horrifying

Super Mario: Makai Teikoku no Megami (Super Mario: Goddess of the Demon World Empire) is a 34-page, one-shot manga by Ikkei Kawai published in Shogakukan's Gekkan CoroCoro Comic Haruyasumi Zōkangō (月刊コロコロコミック春休み増刊号, "Monthly CoroCoro Comic Spring Holiday Special") on March 23, 1993. It is an adaptation of then-upcoming Super Mario Bros. film made to promote behind-the-scenes and novelization books.

Due to its short length, a lot of content and characters are cut out to tell a more simplified retelling of the plot. There are also various major differences; for example, Iggy and Spike are de-evolved into Goombas and then die using the meteorite piece to merge the dimensions. The name of the manga is the same as the Japanese name for the film.

NO FUCKING WAY

The idea of a character who's just afraid to say no to someone and just does whatever the last person asked him to is hilarious

I have been this multiple times
