It's like working class Star Trek

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 4 points 3 weeks ago

Very true. The JMC is the merchant navy to Starfleet's military navy.

I dreamed an episode of Red Dwarf where Lister and Rimmer find an "ancient" article about Sigma Males and each spend the runtime trying to prove they're the most Sigma before realizing that The Cat is more Sigma than either of them could ever be.

This just sounds like it'd be a real episode lmao

pretty sure there's a smeghead males joke in there somewhere

[–] someone@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

I love Red Dwarf. It's aged surprisingly well too.

I've binged it maybe three times; frankly most imaginative space show lagging behind star trek only because red dwarf insists on no intelligent alien life; despite that shortcoming it's still utterly fantastic.

Cat's not alien, though. Felis Sapiens evolved aboard Red Dwarf.

[–] Mardoniush@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, I guess it depends on your definition of sentient alien and if off world evolution of earth life counts.

Bred from the common house cat and about half as smart

I used to watch it a ton when I was younger, but haven’t see. It in probably my decades. I’d be down to do a watch party or something if everyone else wants to.

Same here, must be like 30 years ago at this point lol chomsky-yes-honey

I really like it but the laughter is distracting. Just a thing of the times.

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

They did a remaster set of releases using different footage, and since they didn't have the budget to re-record the laugh track, some of those episodes don't have it. Could watch those!

Also Tongue Tied is a banger. The dancing is great too. They're dancing very much in character.

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

No one talks about it but Lister is a dogboy and hes kinda hot in a slovenly way.

[–] HiImThomasPynchon@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The man literally ate dog food once

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

I'm not that into men but I find Lister genuinely attractive at times despite the obvious issues of all of his.. Listerness.

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Haven't seen it but heard good things. Is it like a comedic Star Trek? So, like the Orville?

[–] DaniJam@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, but much, much more sitcom-y

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I was 4 or 5 years old and I begged my Grandma to let me watch an episode when it came on, I think really just so I could stay up later and I was hooked for life.

[–] retrozombi@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Loved Red Dwarf when I discovered it. Haven't revisited recently, but I still think about it all the time.

[–] Siobhan@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Been a fan for longer than I can recall. One of my favorite comedies. The fact that Craig Charles is in recovery also resonates with me (just over six months clean myself)

[–] PaulSmackage@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Was one of the first sci fi comedys I had read about that wasn't Farscape. I remember watching parts of episodes on either dailymotion, youtube, or google videos (i can't remember) back in the mid 00s. I think i've rewatched at least 3 times now, and still throw on an episode or two whenever i'm sick.

So.....did you know there's an American pilot episode that also features the British Kryten actor? It's....not.....well.....not great. It wouldn't have done for red dwarf what the American office did for the original office show to say the least.

[–] DaniJam@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

I did, watched a bit of it yesterday, actually. It really fails to capture the appeal of Red Dwarf in general imo.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago
[–] unbanshee@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 weeks ago

It's pretty smooth. With a capital SMOO.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 weeks ago

i wish that the american version had succeeded; i would have loved to see some crossover

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

I'm kinda eh on it. But not for any reason I can quite put my finger on, I find it kinda lethargic for a comedy I guess.
