Update: I have also tried adding it to steam and running from there, but it doesn't launch at all
games
Tabletop, DnD, board games, and minecraft. Also Animal Crossing.

I can't even get the fitgirl installer to run on Linux. How did you unpack the game?
wine ./setup.exe
and then select your z drive and then the target directory. I'm surprised it doesn't work at all on your machine.
The installer always crashes at some point.
yeah i will get out of memory errors with any installers doing uncompression like fitgirls. would love to know if there is a reliable workaround for this
Oom killer errors or errors from fitgirl?
from the repack
Weird. I'm afraid I can't be too helpful here as I've never seen this before.
sorry for double comment but this is something i've been desperate to solve for a little while lol. do you never run into out of memory error with the installers? i frequently do with Lutris. is there a difference with just calling vanilla wine yourself vs using Lutris?
I have always used vanilla wine and only oom when I have too many browser tabs open and try to install something.
do you use the limit to 2GB option? I have tried using it and still got the error consistently with certain repacks
I do not
Also, in that case, what do you use instead?
I have a windows partition for edge cases like this.
Two things:
One: It does not work with the default install directory selected. Z:\Games\xyz
maps to /Games/xyz
which you do not have permission to write. Install to C:\Games\xyz
and the game will land in the drive_c folder of the active wine prefix (it is a good idea to use a separate WINEPREFIX for each game / program, so you can tweak WINE's settings individually, but this is not necessary. The default is ~/.wine
)
Two: I need to run the installer in a virtual desktop. Run winecfg
, go to Graphics, enable "Emulate a virtual desktop." This can be disabled after installing the game.
It's been a while since I fiddled with these, but setting the compatibility mode to Windows XP might have helped too. I'm testing one now (Dark Souls 3) and only the first two steps were necessary.
UPDATE: I FIXED IT
Steps:
- Install proton GE 9.18 via
asdf
- Select
[...]/SHProto/Binaries/Wine64/SHProto-Win64-Shipping.exe
in lutris - Select
proton get 9.18
as the runner in lutris - Profit
new proton ge dropped today with some fixes

https://old.reddit.com/r/LinuxCrackSupport/comments/1g7kt1v/silent_hill_2_anybody_able_to_launch_the_2024/
suggested an alternative launcher that worked for someone having problems
https://github.com/Faugus/faugus-launcher
9.18 fixed it
excellent! hope you enjoy
the changelogs sounded promising but you never know
I also didn't realize I was using 9.5 till now

I haven't tried, but you might have better luck with the DODI repack, they tend to work better on linux than the fitgirl ones from what I've heard.
i installed the RUNE crack it's based on using Lutris and it worked for me running as a non steam game. sorry it's not very helpful. i guess you could try the RUNE installer instead of the repack. can I ask how do you get the fitgirl installers to not run out of memory on Linux? happens to me with most of them it seems. does anyone have a workaround for this? i've been trawling reddit threads for ages lol. maybe Lutris is the problem but i thought it just called wine for you?
I just run wine ./installer exe
in a terminal and it works, check journalctl if it's the oom killer
I'll give it a go, ty for help anyways
I had a similar problem with Dark Souls and the problem was it was trying to use a Windows Movie Maker file and I did not have the package for that installed. Are there any files like that in the game folder? Can't access my computer right now but if it isn't solved in a few hours I will try it on my puter.
