Am I just not in the know, or is that a UK thing and not an American thing? The first time I ever heard of it being a slur was in relation to UK politics a few years ago. And I grew up in Boston.
It's more of a south asian thing, of which some live in the UK. It's mostly an in-group thing too, it's their version of "uncle Tom".
It is not really a widely stigmatized slur because to swathes of the Indian-American community being called white is the opposite of offensive
