New phone time (lemmynsfw.com)
submitted 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) by Worx@lemmynsfw.com to c/dull_mens_club@lemmy.world

Just bought a new phone after almost eight years with my current phone. The battery is knackered and the charging port died for the third time. This phone has been great, thank you buddy.

My new phone came in a 31*31*16cm package. It's over 29,000x the volume of the phone it's transporting. Seems incredibly wasteful to me. But despite all of that empty space, there's no charger! Wtf?! Is this a thing now, that you don't get a charger? Or am I just being ripped off?

I went straight to Motorola because my current phone from them is so good, now I'm feeling a bit scammed honestly

EDIT: It seems like I'm getting old, apparently you just don't get a charger any more. It's pretty standard. Helps cut down on packaging apparently(!) I guess I approve in principle, but when you ship it in a massive box anyway and I'll need to buy a new charger to get the best out of the new phone anyway, it just means I have to spend even more than I budgeted for and have a second package delivered to me at even more cost and environmental impact. Yay I guess.

Yeah, but the UK probably has 6 more rich people than Norway. Checkmate, atheists

My PS1 died today (lemmynsfw.com)

I wanted to try out Dune for the first time and it just didn't power on. I am not ok. I took a look inside and cleaned it, but there's no obvious loose connections. Today is a sad day for me

Sadly based on a true story; this is a literal shit-post

I'm not American but even I know you need to keep your dogs secured in a dog safe when you're not using them. It's just basic dog safety

For example, an English person called Bob might introduce themselves as "Bob", whereas an American person called Bob might introduce themselves as "Bahb". (Sorry, don't know the phonetic alphabet but hopefully you get my gist)

Should you pronounce those two people's names the same, with your own natural accent, or should you copy how the person says their own name?

Edit: I specifically picked a generic English name with different pronunciation across different accents. I know my wording wasn't great, sorry! Hopefully the edit is a bit clearer.

Context and other languagesWhen pronouncing a name from a different language, I firmly believe you should copy the pronunciation of the owner of that name, and not Anglicise the name unless asked to. I say this as a speaker of a language that English people regularly mispronounce and even insist to me that they know the correct pronunciation of my language.

I get that you probably save a bit of fuel and that will add up over the huge amount of driving you do, but it seems incredibly dangerous. What don't I understand here?

EDIT: specifically, lorries following other lorries. It rarely affects me as a car driver, it's just something I've noticed

Thanks :)

He's right, everyone is a little racist. That's what happens when you're raised in a racist society.

But that shit was really racist

MICE DIE IN MOUSE TRAPS BECAUSE A METAL BAR SLAMS DOWN AND BREAKS THEIR NECKS.

THE SAME THING HAPPENS WITH POLICE BRUTALITY.

I was doing some building work in my house yesterday and I slowly lost my temper over about 40 minutes but FOR SOME REASON I didn't stop just stop working for the day. Now I have to remove and replace an entire section of my wall because of the damage I caused. It had all just been painted too 😭

I've had a lot of meltdowns and burnouts recently, but I haven't lost my temper like this in years. For me, that's the real symptom of how badly I need a break. I'm not too upset with myself because I know that I would never normally act like this, but I'm still very ashamed. I needed to get this off my chest but I don't want to talk about it to anyone I know.

The moral of the story is that sometimes cheap supplies are shit, and plasterboard walls also suck. I've lived in a stone house most of my life, so it was really surprising to see how easily I could break a wall

As a non-American, I'm very confused by this. If it's a town, it's not rural by definition. Because, you-know, it's urban.

Also, could we get a definition of town vs small town. Do you not have the concept of a village? (Village in the UK would be a settlement with a population of a couple of thousand, with usually a pub, local shop, maybe a post office and primary school if you're lucky).

If 90% of the population call them seagulls, and 99% of the population understand what you mean when you say "seagull", then yes, they are actually called seagulls

I've not read the article yet, but I'm going to assume it's affecting my sleep because I'm reading about how it's affecting my sleep at 04:21 instead of, you know, going to sleep. Just a guess

We know this comment by Shannon Martin is correct and sensible because it was reviewed by Shannon Martin! As a licensed insurance agent, I'm sure she is qualified to talk about uh.. electronics.. hmm
