Previously: Submission Statement Edition

Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.

  1. Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
  • Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
  1. As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
  • Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.

  • I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

I've been scratching my head with this one for close to a year now.

About a year ago my OnePlus Nord CE3 (Android 14, now Android 15) suddenly stopped recognizing the mic on any Bluetooth devices -- even when a device is connected, it stubbornly uses the mic on the phone itself, never the one on the device.

I've tried this with two pairs of TWS earphones and a Bluetooth speaker, all running either Bluetooth v5.2 or v5.3. All three of these devices work perfectly when connected to my Windows laptop.

Help? This used to work, I can't for the life of me figure why it stopped.

Hello everyone,

I have a Pixel 5 running Android 14, and I've always had this issue with Bluetooth devices (any device): after the phone disconnects from a device because of proximity (eg. going too far from the device), it never re-connects automatically when I get back into the device's Bluetooth range. I have to manually enter the Bluetooth settings and tap on the device name I want to connect to

This is something that always worked on my previous phone (which was running LineageOS)

Is this supposed to work this way? Can it be fixed? I've tried to look around in the Bluetooth settings but there isn't much to tweak there

Was tearing my hair out this morning when I couldn't listen to podcasts on the way to work. I updated my S23 Ultra to ONE UI 7 yesterday evening and this morning Android Auto was working fine EXCEPT that I had no audio. Adjustment of volume in the car and on my phone were unsuccessful.

The solution was to make a quick phone call and now audio works fine again. I have no idea why it worked or why audio wasn't working to begin with - but I thought I would share in case it helps anyone else.

OnePlus Nord CE3 updated to Android 15 yesterday and the UI is...horrible? It's plagued by scaling issues everywhere, widgets are way too huge on the home screen, even messing around in developer settings doesn't fix it. Suggestions?

One UI 7 has been disastrous for me, and not just because of preferences or layout. So far, I consistently get one or more of three issues:

  1. Home button (the round square at the bottom) ceasing to function. Seems to happen when I open any app, only actually triggers the moment I tap on the three lines next to it to bring up the open applications screen.

  2. Swiping up from home screen doesn't bring up the app list. Seems to occur whenever I press the home button from the application card screen (pressing the 3 lines button). Only consistent workaround is to go to settings and press home key (which behaves as expected).

  3. Lock screen showing what is basically a screenshot of my home screen as a wallpaper, despite having an actual wallpaper. Seems to occur whenever I tap the power button with an app open, but it's inconsistent. I don't have a workaround for this, it just stops doing that randomly it seems.

these occur very frequently; I'm fighting the UI every time i want to do something. besides that, I've had other issues too; mostly minor issues (visual glitches), but one big one. Earlier today, my phone only displayed the wall paper on my home screen and nothing else; no UI elements at all. Holding down the power button brought up the power options menu (manually adjusted that setting before this occurred), but tapping any of the power options did absolutely nothing. I wasn't even able to reboot or turn off my phone, only thing that shook it out of this siezed up state was tapping the side button settings bar at the bottom of the power options screen.

This has been the buggiest mess of a UI I've ever had the displeasure of using, and that's putting aside a few of my grievances with the aesthetic changes they made to it.

For reference, I'm on a (admittedly beat up) galaxy s21FE, and I do have F-droid installed but the phone is not rooted.

What are some Android tablet brands in the USA other than Google, Lenovo, and Samsung? I'm looking for a #5G tablet in the sub-$300 range and it's seeming like there's one Samsung, or several hundred random Chinese Amazon sellers that don't even have a brand name on the product listing.

Hey Lemmy!

This is a solution for fastboot not listing an Android device.

my device specs

my device specs

  • computer OS: Linux Mint 21.3
  • computer architecture: x86_64
  • USB cable: probably USB 2.0, but I'm not sure. It was not the one that came with my phone
  • phone model: Xiaomi MI 6X (wayne)
  • phone OS: MIUI 12

problem description

problem description

While my phone was in fastboot mode, I couldn't connect to it using the Linux fastboot command.

  • fastboot devices showed nothing:

    me@computer:~$ fastboot devices
    me@computer:~$

  • lsusb listed my phone if it was in normal system mode. If I was in fastboot, lsusb does not list my phone.

  • adb worked fine—but only if I ran it as root. If I started it as a normal user, it showed this error:

    me@computer:~$ adb devices
    List of devices attached
    n22i3nf0    no permissions (user in plugdev group; are your udev rules wrong?);
    see [http://developer.android.com/tools/device.html]
    me@computer:~$

I had to do these steps to make adb devices list it properly:

    me@computer:~$ adb kill-server
    me@computer:~$ sudo adb start-server

  • other phones were working fine with both adb and fastboot.

solution

solution

I had to add my phone's device and vendor ID to /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules. My other phones were added already, that's why fastboot worked with them, but this phone wasn't added, so it did not work. This solution is also the standard solve for the "no permissions (user in plugdev group)" error, so if the below guide doesn't work, try someone else's guide.

The below text is from this gist, with some edits.

  1. First, we are going to determine your phone's vendor ID and device ID. Reboot your phone into normal system mode. (we can't get the IDs in fastboot mode because lsusb doesn't show the device.)
  2. Unplug your device from the computer and type lsusb in the terminal. You should get an output similar to this:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:8008 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0bda:0129 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTS5129 Card Reader Controller
Bus 003 Device 033: ID 0cf3:3004 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR3012 Bluetooth 4.0
Bus 003 Device 047: ID 045e:07fd Microsoft Corp. Nano Transceiver 1.1
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 174f:148d Syntek
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
  1. Now plug your phone into the computer and run the command again, the output should be different:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:8008 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0bda:0129 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTS5129 Card Reader Controller
Bus 003 Device 033: ID 0cf3:3004 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR3012 Bluetooth 4.0
Bus 003 Device 047: ID 045e:07fd Microsoft Corp. Nano Transceiver 1.1
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 174f:148d Syntek
Bus 003 Device 060: ID 05c6:6765 Qualcomm, Inc.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
  1. Take a note of the new output ID. For me it's Bus 003 Device 060: ID 05c6:6765 Qualcomm, Inc.

  2. record the characters after ID (in this case, it's 05c6:6765). The four characters before the colon are the vendor ID and the four characters after are the device ID.

  3. edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules and add this:

    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="vendor_id", ATTR{idProduct}=="device_id", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

make sure to replace vendor_id with your vendor ID and device_id with your device ID.

  4. Save and close the file.

  5. Now in the terminal, run this, which makes the file readable by all users. I don't know why this is necessary.

    sudo chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules

  6. restart your computer. This is what I did to make it work, but if you don't want to, other methods I've seen are:

    • sudo systemctl restart udev
    • or:
      sudo udevadm control --reload-rules
      sudo udevadm trigger

  7. Now you can try the command fastboot devices and it should successfully list your device as one of the entries.

still doesn't work?

Other solutions which I have seen:

  • use a different USB cable
  • use a different USB port
  • use a different computer
  • use a different OS: switch from Linux to Windows, or vice versa, or use a different version of Ubuntu.

Good luck!

Hey Lemmy!

I have an app that keeps showing a pop up that it "doesn't run without Google play services". It in fact runs just fine, except for the pop up, which is extremely annoying. What are my options for removing it? And, how do apps know that I don't have Google play services?

extra details

  • I use LineageOS 21 on Android 14

  • the app is the paid version of TripView (installed via Aurora Store)

  • I tried installing microG, but it didn't remove the pop up—maybe because I haven't set up the "system spoof signature" option. But even if I do set it up, I'm concerned about:

    1. microG running some background services, wasting battery (because the app functions without any extra services)

    2. unnecessarily connecting/sending information to Google's servers

edit for clarity:

The "pop up" is an in app widget-like thing, not an Android notification. It looks like this:

it's not solved yet, but thanks to everyone for your support! :)

Lock screen and ads (discuss.tchncs.de)
submitted 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

This link about Glance made me think about this.

Majority of folks here might not be aware of this company. Their software usually ships on low end phones mainly in the Indian/South Asian market. They do seemed to have pivoted to the US as well but I am not sure if overseas models also see this scourge. As of right now, if one's phone has this, they will basically see a new glorified wallpaper with news/text each time they unlock their phone. And if you read the article, they wish to go even furthur. It can technically be switched off though often it's buried deeper than Dante' s last layer of hell.

Do overseas(read:other Asian markets/European/American and so on) also have any local equivalent to this scourge from my country? Are ads plastered on lock screens on entry level phones common anywhere else in the Android world?

Play Store 3D Pinball Space Cadet Download

From the article:

If you grew up in the Windows XP era, than you probably spent hours playing its iconic free game, “3D Pinball Space Cadet.” Now, “Space Cadet” pinball has been ported to Android, and it’s completely free.

One of the many things that Windows XP will be remembered for is the pinball game that essentially everyone who ever used the operating system played at some point or another. The game has been immortalized many times, and now it’s available on Android.

Developer Kyle Sylvertre used a decompiled version of Space Cadet Pinball from k4zmu2a on GitHub to bring the game to the Google Play Store for Android users. The game is optimized for touchscreens with the left and right sides of the display acting as the triggers, and you can also tap the far right side to use the ball launcher. The game runs in portrait mode, supports 18 languages, integrates with Google Play Games for a leaderboard, and is less than 5MB in size.

And it’s all completely free too.

There are no ads or in-app purchases here, as the developer “just wanted to see it on Android with a Google Play leaderboard.” On that note, cheats are disabled to keep the integrity of that leaderboard, but the developer hints that cheats might come back with an option to turn off the leaderboard.

In any case, it’s a nice hit of nostalgia. Drop your high score in the comments below.

upcoming OnePlus device, rumored to have a massive 7800mAh battery (per Wccftech).
and it would absolutely smoke the 5,000 and 4,685mAH batteries in the Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Instead, Apple and Samsung seem to be prioritizing thinness at all costs, for reasons that aren't entirely clear beyond aesthetics and bragging rights. It's been years since I've heard anyone complain about how thick a phone is, if not a decade or more. Complaints have trended in the opposite direction, I'd say -- without a case, some phones can be so thin and slippery that they're hard to grip securely. Even my wife's OnePlus 9 5G has that issue. A few foldables, like Google's Pixel 9 Pro Fold , are so thin when open that they feel like they might bend or snap.

I have had my Xiaomi phone for a few years and have mixed feelings about it. It is one of the Redmi Note 12 series.

One thing that is awesome, if maybe the single thing that it is great with, is charging.

It goest from almost 0 to full charge within 15 minuttes! I never realized thatvi needed this, until i had it.

Now, while looking at phones that maybe could take better photos, had less bloatware and maybe just worked better, i just seem to gravitate back to Xiaomi that apparently is one of the few companies that make phones with hyper charge!

I would have imagined that this would be the new standayby now

I am considering one of the higher end flagships of the company, simply because of this but I am still sceptical of their performance and especially all the bloatware and ads that seem to be integrated into their OS

I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 and I just got the new OneUI update. Now when I watch media in Jerboa there's an annoying scrolling notification that appears:

How do I get rid of this?

Also how do I get rid of whatever this is in my edge tray?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I figured out the first one, search settings for the Now Bar and disable whatever you don't want to see
