Really hoping this plays out differently from the last time China responded to a large trade imbalance with an imperial power by buying up a lot of a precious metal.
What was the last time?
To elaborate on AbbysMuscles's answer, the Opium Wars started because the British Empire wanted Chinese tea and porcelain but the Chinese had no interest in British goods and only accepted silver. This got to a point where it was putting a strain on Britain's silver reserves, so, in an effort to find a different trade good, they hit on opium. Once the opium trade took off and started to cause huge harms, the Chinese attempted to ban it and the Brits declared war in response.
