Handheld mega is here! I have a few gaming handheld topics I want to yap about, I'll try to add one a day.

First thing I want to talk about is new to me, and relatively new in general, the DSpico! The DSpico is a new, fully open source flashcart for the Nintendo DS and DSi. The whole stack from the hardware, software, firmware is all freely available for anyone to modify and use. Built with an RP2040 microcontroller, 2 megabytes of flash memory, micro usb port.

So that's cool and all, we love open source projects, but what can it actually do? The basic function, for those who don't know, is to load software off an SD card on old consoles (Homebrew, launchers, and of course games). This lets you keep your entire library on one cartridge, including homebrew games and rom hacks. In addition this is the first flashcart to support DSiWare (downloadable games for the DSi), so you can pop it in a DSi or 3ds and play those games, in addition to the DS library.

Some other cool features. It has one of the lowest power draws of any flashcart, much less then the classic R4 clones. You don't need to charge it, it just takes power from the DS, but it does have noticeably longer playtimes then other flashcarts. It has a custom, and very pretty launcher with boxart and everything. Themes, right now I'm using one modeled after the Wii menu. It also boots and loads games much faster then other flashcarts or even cfw (custom firmware) on a DSi or 3ds. You can put GBArunner or other emulators on it if you wish.

More of a "toy" feature that I don't think most people will care about, but you can also force the DS fat and lite to run DSiWare games which was not originally possible. You do need to use TwilightMenu++ for this instead of the default launcher, but you can either switch to TwilightMenu++ for everything or run both. If I remember correctly about a third of DSiWare can run, so no where near everything, but still neat considering the DSi is more powerful.

Another neat aside, Phenommod is releasing a DSpico that has been modified to have IR support. This could be used in future homebrew, but is also used by the Pokewalker from Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. It will work with original units but they are also releasing their own version, for cheaper and with a backlight screen, if you're into that. It also has a better CPU that lets you run compressed roms, even lower power usage, and a USB C port!

The kind of, "default" build by the team has micro usb which is a pain. Although you don't use this port much in normal use so I don't actually see it as a major flaw, even in current year. You can do some cool homebrew stuff with it though. One interesting example I saw was using a DSi as a webcam. But all you need it for is flashing firmware, you can take the SD card out for managing roms/art/themes/settings/etc.

But yea, finally a fully hackable DS flashcart! None of the BS of other carts.

izutsumi-idea the oldest statue we've found thus far was basically furry art

another one: if a group of chickens lose their rooster one of the hens becomes trans and takes on the role, along with some physical chances. roosters are the hall monitor of the group, breaking up fights and helping them find food. it's a vital enough position that it has to be filled

final one: the dutch have wooden shoes called sabats, and when used in creative strike action they got...stuck...in machinery. and thus it was called "sabotage"

eh...fuck it one more: squirrels are matriarchal and have a harem

    Love that figurine.

The chicken thing is also very cool. Maybe kinda related fact, limpet snails are sequential hermaphrodites that stack on top of each other they change sex based on age and position in the stack. Males are young and higher up in the stack, females are older and lower in the stack. When an older female dies, the next male in line changes sex and takes over from the snail that was there previously.

"Mystery flavor" dum-dums are actually industrial waste.

There is only one dum-dum production line (located in Bryan, Ohio) and only one flavor can be made at a time. Cleaning the whole thing out takes a long time and would be prohibitively expensive to do so between flavors. Therefore, the solution is to use the next flavor to flush out what is left of the previous flavor. This process leads to an interim mixing of flavors, and those are labeled as "mystery flavor". The order in which the flavors are made is determined by what would taste decent AND it is kept a secret from the general public, as to preserve the mysterious nature of the mystery flavor.

I'm bad at remembering this type of stuff on the fly, so I'm just gonna leave 2 I learned recently:

    • You can sharpen a razor blade (those Gillette Mach something ones for example) with a jeans and a match box. You basically move it in the opposite direction to shave so it doesn't damage the fabric and the match box strip 20-40 times with some force, then turn the jeans and the match box upside down and do it again.
    • Don't know if this one works on other countries, but here in Brasil in a mall's food area (don't know what it's called in english), if you bring 100 bucks in change and ask around if any of the food places there would like the change, they will give you a 100 bucks bill back and will give you a free meal as thanks. (I cheated I knew about this one, but was reminded it existed yesterday).

    mall's food area

We call it a food court in my part of the us.

Also that rules! Does that kind of exchange only really happen at malls there? The only time I've heard about that here is if you're kind of a regular at the establishment so they kind of know/trust you. And even then it was more of a thing when I was a kid, I think so many places are mostly cashless these days that it's less important

Cool, I learned something new! In direct translation, we call it something like "feeding plaza" here.

Honestly don't know, but I only heard of it in malls, so I'm gonna assume it's only there. And it makes sense since it's a very busy area and change is often needed. Nowadays most people use cashless payment too, through our system called Pix. But I guess it is still needed enough to still happen.

Now that I'm hearing both of them, food court and feeding plaza both sound so strange and overly specific. Like why do we need a separate phrase just for mall food areas? Thanks for the random and interesting language exchange!

And it makes sense since it's a very busy area and change is often needed

Yeah that's what I was thinking once you mentioned it, but somehow it's not the place to try it here. I think malls are too corporate/big business-y where I am I guess? Although I've never tried it so maybe I'm just missing out lol
