I love waffles :3 easily my favorite breakfast food. Developing different recipes has been so much fun! Lately I've been having one with lots of ground flaxseed and it has been keeping me quite regular. I'll have one or two of those in the morning with some tofu breakfast/lunch "meat" and a bit of cheapo syrup. There also was a version with pea protein powder that worked out pretty well but I neglected to write down the recipe, oops.

Vegan waffle recipe

Makes 4-5 "standard" belgian waffles, actual amount will vary based on what kind of waffle iron you use.

Equipment

2 bowls, preferably with pouring spouts

Whisk

Measuring cups and spoons

Waffle Iron

Optional: Using a rubber spatula/scraper will help when pouring the batter into the waffle iron.

Dry mix:

1 cup white flour

2-3 tablespoons ground flaxseed

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

Optional: 1-2 teaspoon powdered cinnamon or blend of "sweet" spices.

Wet ingredients:

1 cup plant milk (see notes)

1 tablespoon neutral tasting cooking oil

Optional: 1/2 tablespoon breakfast syrup or granulated sugar will add some flavor and improve the texture of the crust.

Instructions:

  1. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl until combined, set aside

  2. In a seperate bowl, preferably one with a pouring spout, whisk the wet ingredients together vigorously, if using granulated sugar whisk until it is dissolved.

  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredient bowl and mix until combined but still slightly lumpy. Allow the batter to sit for at least five minutes so the flaxseed can hydrate.

  4. Make the waffles, portions and waffle iron operation will vary. Consult the manual or wing it carefully.

Notes:

  • This recipe may take longer to cook fully compared to other mixes. Ultimately the steam produced by the cooking process is always an accurate indicator of doneness.

  • The dry mix can be made well ahead of time, a double batch fits nicely into a 32 oz deli container.

  • Adjusting the amount of plant milk will make the waffles more or less dense, experiment and adjust to preferences. 2/3 cup dry mix to 1/2 cup wet mix (or 1 cup to 3/4 cup) is my preferred ratio.

  • The batter keeps well overnight if refrigerated in an airtight container but you will need to add a little more liquid and stir thoroughly because it will be very thick.

  • The batter dries like cement, wash the bowl immediately after using.

I have some questions about so called "genital preference" I keep seeing people talk about on R*ddit:

genitals, dysphoria, transphobia, transmedicalismI'm not sure this is the best place to ask this or if I should make a proper post, but how exactly is "genital preference" not transphobia? If someone says they don't like trans people, that's transphobia, if someone says they don't date trans people, that's transphobia, if someone says they don't hook up and/or date trans people because their genitalia does not correspond to their "preference", but that they "respect" trans people, then it is completely fine and not transphobia? Just how? I don't get it.

I understand no one owes sex to anyone, but how is this not simply internalized transphobia related to the roles of genitalia in gender and sexual attraction?

I mentioned how I had a discussion about this on R*ddit the other day, but since then the Brasilian LGBT subreddit r/arco_iris have talked about this a bunch in the last week, and all I've seen is transphobia after transphobia there, with even multiple people suggesting attraction to trans people is apart from heterosexuality and homosexuality which is just completely wrong. From my point of view all this does is enable this type of bullshit transphobic discourse. Yesterday I had a cis gay guy tell me that he's not obliged to care about trans men because they don't have penises and that his want to bounce on dick is what matters to him, and that anything else is infringing on his individual preferences. As if dildos do not fucking exist to begin with, not to say phalloplasty. But I also saw a bunch of cis lesbians over the last 2 weeks saying they don't like penis so they can't be with trans woman, again as if all trans women have penises and as if those that do even use it, when a huge portion of trans women have dysphoria regarding their genitalia and don't even like to touch it during sex. Also going by this logic these cis lesbians must also hate dildos right? Or when it's a piece of rubber/plastic it's suddenly fine? And how is this not at the very least transmedicalism since only post surgery trans people are then accepted as enough for these people to even be fully attracted towards?

I've even seen someone say it's only bisexuals that suggest this is an issue to begin with and yesterday even saw a trans woman say that it's a CIA psyop to suggest that "genital preference" is transphobia, then in the same comment this trans woman said she completely gave up dating cis woman because of the fear she is gonna be labelled a "sexual predator" just for having a penis... HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THIS IS DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE THING YOU'RE DECRYING AS A CIA PSYOP? Just how?

I legit don't get it and this is starting to bother me a lot since yesterday, specially because I'm starting to doubt myself because I keep seeing people say I'm in the wrong. I'll gladly stop going out of my way to even comment on this if I'm wrong, but I'd rather ask this here in a place I actually trust than in any other place.

spoileras you described it yeah its transphobic, along with what others said here. but another thing that might make it less confusing is the idea of attraction to specific genitals being a fetish (said neutrally), and like with other specific attractions it rides a thin line of either just having a small effect on the trend of people youre attracted to (like someone having a type for hair colour) but not including or excluding anyone youd otherwise date, or being objectifying and awful to act upon, and leading to the types of bigotry mentioned by the others. I think on some subconscious level people are realizing this distinction between sexuality attraction to gendery things, and heavily culturally enforced fetish for specific genitals but then drawing the worst possible conclusion, and making things worse instead of better.

spoilerThat makes sense, I didn't think of that to be honest, but is yet another thing to factor in to the multitude of things already packed into that argument to begin with.

and like with other specific attractions it rides a thin line of either just having a small effect on the trend of people youre attracted to (like someone having a type for hair colour) but not including or excluding anyone youd otherwise date

That's something I forgot to mention, but the word "preference" makes this whole thing misleading, a preference doesn't mean you don't like anything different, just that you like something more than other things, but to these people it doesn't matter, their "preference" is supreme, and therefore, anyone that does not meet their criteria is excluded.

spoilerNot only is it transphobic (which a lot of people have covered), but it's ableist.

I think we've lost a lot of the discretion between a private opinion and a public one. Obviously no one has to date or have sex with anyone they don't want to. A person can decide not to date a trans person privately due to their genitals and that is okay. But when they voice this opinion publicly it is not exempt from critique. It is saying that there is no trans person who can have such a lovely personality or attractive looks that this will overcome the fact they have a penis or a vulva when they expected a vulva or a penis.

The reason I think it is ableist, is hypothetically a person meets a cis man, they are handsome and kind, they have lost their penis due to an accident or cancer. Is it okay to not want to date them because of this? I don't know. Seems fucked.

Likewise people bring up the infertility of trans women. But plenty of cis women are infertile. Due to PMOS or other conditions. Plenty of cis women don't have functionally vaginas due to lichen sclerosis or vaginismus. The idea that peoples worth is stored in "healthy" reproductive organs is fucked.

Genital preference is a lot like the preference people have for hieghts, skin colors, weights, etc. It's just purely based on appearance with the added issue of people not being able to deprogram themselves from expectations about what sex should look like.

Now dating people based on appearance or what sex acts they can perform for you* isn't even a good thing to begin with, so the whole thing is on shaky ground right away.

*that's not even mentioning that people get very uncreative about the kinds of acts possible even with the "wrong genitals".

Last time I and another trans person pointed that out, they either said it's not the same or just completely ignored us and proceeded to be transphobic again.

At least I don't feel like I'm inventing issues out of thin air anymore and that this shit is just socially accepted transphobia in that subreddit.

spoilerif you're dating someone it just straight up is. Like even if you are really that opposed to having sex with their natal genitalia, are there not cis people who can't or won't have sex for some amount of time in a relationship?

Yes, it simply is. And internalized homophobia too.

third paragraph is bang on no notes. I would like to add this, uh somewhere in my comment but cis people also have no understanding how much our genitals change. And obviously as you said, that plenty of us don't even want to use them.

Speaking of bisexuals, half of them won't date us. What possible excuse could they have, if they already like both genders and both sets of genitals? Its just transphobia, and if half of bi people are I have no reason to give cis people in general the benefit of the doubt on this one.

No, transphobia, including this bothers me a lot too, which is why I stick to trans only spaces and even then a lot of them are cis bootlickers. Trans spaces are honestly over run with cis bootlickers I have no idea how to fix this issue

  • spoilerGood to know I'm not being an "unreasonable radical making trans activism look bad" like I've been labeled by these people.

The only reason I even stuck commenting there was because another trans girl I met there was also commenting on how that sub was transphobic, otherwise I wouldn't even go back there.

That's in line with exactly what I've heard, so I just don't get how that can even be used as an argument.
