If a stupid fucking idiot teenager kills someone while robbing a convenience store, they go to prison.

But if a stupid fucking idiot teenager kills someone while robbing an entire country, they get a medal.

I'd respect her death if she had died robbing a gas station, not if she was refueling the planes that bomb hospitals.

Its just about how you feel honestly. I dont think your line of thinking is consistent.

Are people victims of material circumstance or not? Do people get deluded by the environments forced on them by capitalists or not?

It kind of sounds like you expect people to fall into a good vs evil binary and that you couldn't have possibly be a evil-doer because you are innately something. Which in my opinion, is not how a Marxist would think.

Don't get me wrong. Fuck the troops, fuck the wars but if we're talking about building consciousness I don't think your way works and is even counter productive.

I guess the key question is at what point a human stops deserving forgiveness

From an abstract and from a practical point of view

Yeah I agree, but I think my ability to forgive goes past 19 year old dumbdumb who joined the military. My ability to forgive stops at being on your second contract unless you have a good explanation or you did something worthy for repentance.

Some idiot gangbanger indiscriminately shooting up a park is forgivable to me.

I think forgiveness is a virtue and a test of maturity, which we are still responsible for acknowledging.

It is possible, if she didn't die, that she could have realized the error of her ways. If that happened we could have this conversation, because I agree about forgiveness being a virtue. However what actually, materially, happened was a murderous terrorist was killed in an Iranian self defense strike, making the world A slightly better place.

teenagers in the global south are murdered by them for much less stupid mistakes, or even no mistakes at all. the double standard is always evident, first worlders get infinite grace

No I am not speaking of morality whatsoever. I'm speaking of self-defense. Killing those who attempt to kill you is valid and correct course of action from a purely strategic perspective. It is strategically correct for everyone in the global south to seek to kill American soldiers whenever possible. Your handwringing over it is the moralizing because you likely have some friends or family in the military that distorts your thinking and creates a pro-western bias that you have not yet examined.

Being a stupid fucking idiot teenager isnt plausible?

there's no amount of stupid that excuses seeing anything from the last 25 years and signing up anyway.

Disagree entirely, do you not know normal people or is it all bougie white people with nice parents? Youd make the same decisions as her if you were this girl, thinking youd somehow be different seems antithetical to marxism

You would make the same decisions she made if you were her and thinking otherwise is magical thinking. You're only who you are right now because of material circumstances.

Do you also think that people who are in gangs and commit crimes are also animals? Or victims of circumstance? Or is it both?

I don't think people here are consistent on their views and are actually in favor abrahamic american style punishment when it comes down to it.

What does that have to do with 19 year old dumbdumb getting blown up with a missile? Can you not tell the difference between someone who is arguably a child or atleast made a life altering decision as a child versus a 40 year old grifter?

US imperial troops deserve any reprecussion they encounter as long as they joined as adults

Sure, but i think the gradient of punishment and level of forgiveness extended should correlate with who they are, where they are from, how they came up, why they joined, etc.

Not everyone gets to be born white with nice parents, you guys take that for granted. If you were born this girl you wouldnt be magically more ethical, more morally sound or more intelligent than her.

Don't assume my race or that of other users unless they have explicitly stated it

While I can sympathise with poverty driving people into taking what they think is a steady job as well as the attractiveness of the GI Bill, it is not the only path even if others maybe require more work
The majority choose those paths rather than becoming a solider of the empire
And to a certain degree with the propgadisation, but above a certain age excpecting people to form a wordview outside of public school education and CIA Jim Hollywood rah-rah americana is an acceptable position espeially in this information age

If you were born this girl you wouldnt be magically more ethical, more morally sound or more intelligent than her.

Perhaps not and without getting into nature vs nurture, I could just as easily have ended up one of the majority of people born into her same circumstances who did not join up be enforcers of empire, and forged a life path that does not contain contributing to mass slaughter of innocents

You still think it's a moral issue and youre wrong

I know for a fact that there are many many many poor people who try to join but get turned away because they are 1) Too fat 2) Too stupid 3) Too unhealthy 4) Criminal Records. 5) Drugs

"Approximately 77% (or about 3 out of 4) of young Americans aged 17 to 24 do not qualify to join the U.S. military without a special waiver. Pentagon studies show that the vast majority of young people are ineligible due to specific disqualifying standards."

When they give the select few with courage to join, they dont mean that, they mean those who werent already harvested by the US.

They dont join out of a sense of comradery or anything like that its just the imperial core squeezed everything out of its population and is left with a more narrow parameter.

insert quote by Hitler's secretary after seeing a memorial to Sophie Scholl

I wasn't aware of this quote so I went looking:

Of course, the terrible things I heard from the Nuremberg Trials, about the six million Jews and the people from other races who were killed, were facts that shocked me deeply. But I wasn't able to see the connection with my own past. I was satisfied that I wasn't personally to blame and that I hadn't known about those things. I wasn't aware of the extent. But one day I went past the memorial plaque which had been put up for Sophie Scholl in Franz Josef Strasse, and I saw that she was born the same year as me, and she was executed the same year I started working for Hitler. And at that moment I actually sensed that it was no excuse to be young, and that it would have been possible to find things out.

I mean yeah everything exists in degrees, but anyone canny enough to make an informed decision about joining would've had a formative experience of noticing the absolute failure in Afghanistan, the culmination of 20 years of the GWOT, and then thinking "you know what, we just need to send more people out there".
