Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Paul hasn't rigged fights (unlike Tate, who padded his record with professional throwers), he just fights really incapable opponents, like retirees and such.
One of my biggest triggers is people thinking the Tyson fight was fixed because Tyson didnt kill him lol.
People really mythologized him into some insane killer at the age of 60 lol. Ive had to watch all my favorite fighters get killed by father time and it is WILD to see people think that the age didnt matter. Of course a guy in his physical prime with some conditioning and mediocre boxing skills can out move and out throw a 60 year old Tyson lol
Anyway I just wanted to rant about that lol.
I appreciate it, since some people don't know the context. Tyson didn't look like he was even fit to run faster than a jog, but people just sort of glossed over it to make conspiracy theories that he threw rather than see that he obviously took a match he was way too old to realistically win for the sake of whatever they were paying him.
People usually do the "but he looked so strong and fast in his training videos!" Yeah man hes going 100% for like 20 seconds lol. Thats not how a professional fight goes. It was honestly embarassing as fuck for the whole thing.
But tbf when AJ fought him I was like "lol wow he is actually going to die to AJ" and it was 5 rounds of AJ playing with him until he just destroyed him lol
He's not fixing the fights, yea.
Instead, he is very carefully selecting opponents he can actually beat. Which is washed fighters, or fighters who aren't boxers he forces into a boxing match. Like, people act like a MMA grappler should magically be able to beat a boxer in a boxing match where grappling is illegal
I don't know what you call that. Career fixing?
Yeah he is 100% doing that. Mfs want to fight because its a bag so they aren't gonna say no.
Its unethical at the very best, and kinda dumb that it works. Its pretty funny he did fight AJ who legit could kill him, but every other fight is just washed or not great boxer mma guys lol. He fought that fury brother and lost too, hes just extremely mediocre, but capable of beating up on older slower guys
He knows he is super hated and people want to see him lose. People need to stop caring about this joke of a guy.
If the Paul brothers have a super power it's getting people's attention.
You're never going to get people to ignore a good Ric Flair-type heel sadly. It's too good of a gimmick to let go.
I think we can do better when it comes to heels.
Oldest ride, longest line
I blame the media that shows some old guy beat up a younger guy saying “heh, nice try, kid” and not him on a morphine drip having his knees rebuilt with NASA science after
I see that, i read all of it, i understood what you said but i still think the tyson fight was fixed.
If there was any fix, it was to ensure Jake Paul didn't kill Tyson. You're severely underestimating how advantageous youth and PEDs are and how much wear and tear a professional athlete competing at a world class level accumulates even if they stay mostly untouched inside the ring and in the healthiest regimen outside of it, which Tyson definitely didn't.
Nawnawnaw m8
It was fixed. He pulled his punches. Compare that fight to his fight vs Roy Jones Jr where he also didnt go hard to the head but didnt hold back on technique
It really aint man. The rjj fight was 5 years ago and it still slowed down. Roy is also old as fuck, you can just go like that on a guy who can just walk backward faster than your old ass can approach.
If Jake beat AJ or even went the distance with him it would be fishy as fuck, and he got smoked when AJ decided to stop playing with his food. Mike Tyson is just an old man. Like literally a 100 year old man in fight years.
all of his fights vs pro or ex pro fighters are fixed. Joshua def went off script. Anderson Silva is a clever counterstriker, what he did against whatever Paul brother in that ring, that wasn't him. Neither Paul brothers would be considered good amateur fighters much-less pro fighters.
I agree that Paul is not a real pro fighter, but this fixing stuff is genuinely just cope. He was just exploiting people who could be used to hype up the match without being serious opponents (at that time, in boxing specifically)
Paul has unlimited money and time for fitness, personal trainers, coaches, facilities, medical care, etc. He has no talent but he has the brute force of wealth and youth and that's enough to crush surgically selected opponents even if he could never be a pro (and he could never be a pro).
Anderson Silva was past his physical prime when he won the UFC title, he then kept it for over 5 years, fought another 5, retired, moved onto boxing, and fought Jake Paul at nearly 50 years old.
Jake isn't an actual world class pro, but he didn't need to fix fights to win against his cherry picked opposition of retired, much lighter fighters from an entirely different sport.
I gotta be honest and say I think its both. That tongue thing just seems like a signal, and I hate the guy and this makes it funnier so therefore I believe it.
He picks easy fights and gives himself a tool to cool things down if it gets too hard.
It's not good epistemology. The most you can possibly argue for is a crooked judge.
Bad epistemology is the title for my Berlin Techno EP.
