Columbus was a fraud, until his death in early 1500s.

His titles, riches, power, etc at the time were directly tied to his having found a shortcut to The Indies. He stood to pay major penalties for being wrong. Instead, he insisted that it was in fact everyone else who can't read a map, and not him.

Of course members of this administration would consider him a hero.
