President Donald Trump wants to eliminate HOME Investment Partnerships Program, and House Republicans overseeing federal budget negotiations did not include funding for it in their budget proposal. Experts and state housing agencies say that would set back tens of thousands of future affordable housing developments nationwide, particularly hurting Appalachian towns and rural counties where government aid is sparse and investors are few.

Rural communities should be wanting to ax Trump.

[-] hansolo@lemmy.today 31 points 8 months ago

These are the same communities where large swathes of the population greedily apply for all the social safety net programs, often saying they need to get the benefits before the fictional welfare queens take them all, then immediately vote for the person saying they're running on a platform to get rid of all those same programs.

Source: And I made it out!

Yep. I grew up in deeply red, deeply rural area. Most of the small farms were propped up by tax dollars. Even the farmers I knew would point this out to me. Same for a whole lot of extremely poor people I grew up with - lunches were subsidized (free or reduced lunch depending on need) at school, and I think some kids didn't get a breakfast at home because things were tight.

Those people were living in utter desperation and absolutely needed and benefited from welfare, even if they didn't want to admit they were benefiting from the same programs that those OTHER, URBAN PEOPLE were...

They were still fiercely loyal to Ronnie Raygun (this was the 80s). What else ya gunna do? Vote for a LIEbural DEMONcrat? They are trying to turn 'merica commie and don't even want the BUY-BULL in our skoolz! 🤦‍♂️

What I still don't get is, where do they think all this "saved tax money" is going? Do they think it'll come back to them? Do they think the government, fat on (to use their verbiage) handouts, are going to ask less of them?

No, this "saved money" isn't paying off national debt, it's going straight into private pockets one way or another, followed only by another six trillion dollar aircraft carrier and Ai powered mega-proprietary vaporware jets nobody asked for.

They will cheer for cutting their own food stamps as they watch a half-assed military parade ramble through the Capitol, a display of ego that dwarfs their entire town's annual revenue within a mere couple of hours.

The power grid wavers, the bridges crumble, the un-rotated crops wither, the potholes grow, and the school's ceilings leak, but hey if you wanted a shot at education you could've just joined the Army in the first place, serf!

"We're all in this together" they say as they talk about "growing pains" and "pulling weight", as they shit in gilded thrones aboard their yachts and hold a Bible aloft whilst spitting down on their neighbor.

At least we're FREE(TM) unlike the latter days of Soviet Russia! /s

They absolutely should be but the only news source they trust is Fox News and Fox tells them what a great job Trump is doing, how all their problems are caused by liberals or dangerous illegal immigrants, and they believe every word. I work with a lot of these rural Trumpers and I don't think they're evil people, I just think they're gullible and not very bright.

[-] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

Their evil, dont let them off because they are dumb. They are alsp racist it's why they are easy to convince that it's illegal and liberals ruining things. I have family that are mega and they are also not all stupid. Some just peices of shit.

It's really easy (cheap) to manipulate people in rural America.
