why does NPR/PBS keep asking for donations from regular Joes when they clearly get so much money from the state department and orgs with similar funding and goals (hexbear.net)

With NPR I always assumed those donation were helping to fund specifically the local branch of it

NPR is syndicated so if you donate to a local station they'll probably spend part of that money to pay for NPR content. I assume if you donate to NPR directly you're donating to NPR directly.
