A pair of hikers in New York called emergency services to report that a third member of their group had died, but when a park ranger responded to rescue them it turned out they were just high on hallucinogenic mushrooms, officials say.

The third hiker was uninjured - and not dead - and the hikers were "in an altered mental state", according to a report issued by parks officials.

The incident took place on 24 May on Cascade Mountain in the Adirondacks High Peaks of upstate New York.

The third person also called 911 during the hike, "and was not injured", the report states. They were allowed to continue their camping trip, while the pair were taken to police.

Two people, tripping hard enough to get lost and think their friend was dead, were taken into police custody. They were committing no crime. They will have trauma from whatever the police do to them.

Most drug problems are because of the government and their evil war against drugs.

Possibly, yeah. But maybe not.

Remember to stay cool.

I always do, never lost my shit because of drugs. But remember ACAB as well.

Police strike me as the kind of people who would think fucking with tripping people is funny. That is if they don't just beat the shit out of them.

Well technically, mushrooms are illegal (not that they should be), and I bet that technically counts as falsifying police reports or some similar charge, and even if mushrooms were legal this is technically "public intoxication," so like, they were committing some crime, but yeah.

They're that fucked up and you think they should be allowed on their merry way?! Not saying they should be punished, but some authority should take charge of them.

Typical trip on psilocybin is going to be 4-6 hours. They had enough time to get lost, think their friend was dead, find apparently some kind of trail guide (which makes me think they were pretty close to civilization) and then wait for the cops. They were probably well on their way to normal by that time.

BUT that being said you make a good point. They sound inexperienced, possibly very young. I'm just saying the police are the wrong guys for the job. I bet the trail guide could have had a lot more fun than their regular shift trip sitting these yahoos.

And you nailed the point we're all inadvertently arguing about: Cops should not be responding to bullshit like this.

Guess my country. :(

If you call emergency services without an emergency you should be fined at the minimum. Don't waste first responders time.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Negative. We do not want to make people hesitant to call emergency services when necessary. You can disagree with some guy on the internet, but I'm just parroting literally every body of first responders.

Honestly that's a fair take. I think intentions really matter. I'm not sure what the details are in this case so it is hard to know.
